The playoffs are in January and the Super Bowl is in February

The National Football League (NFL) playoffs are a single-elimination tournament held after the regular season to determine the NFL champion. Twelve teams from the American Football Conference (AFC) and twelve teams from the National Football Conference (NFC) qualify for the playoffs. The four division winners in each conference are seeded 1–4 based on their overall won-lost-tied record, and the wild card teams are seeded 5 and 6. The AFC and NFC champion games are played on the first Sunday in February at sites that rotate annually, with future sites already determined through 2024.

In January of each year, two semi-final playoff games are played to determine which team from each conference will advance to their respective conference championship game. The first round of the playoffs is commonly referred to as the Wild Card round. In this round, the third seed faces the sixth seed and the fourth seed faces the fifth seed in two separate games. The higher seeded team hosts each game. The winners of these games then advance to play the second seeded team and the first seeded team in their respected conferences during divisional playoff weekend. These two contests take place on Saturday and Sunday, respectively. During this weekend, four teams are eliminated from Super Bowl contention.

The winners of these divisional playoff games then face each other in Conference Championship weekend with a berth in the Super Bowl on stake. The conference champions host these games on Sunday afternoon.
