The history of the Minnesota Twins
The Minnesota Twins are a professional baseball team based in Minneapolis, Minnesota. They play in the Central Division of Major League Baseball (MLB). The Twins were founded in Washington, D.C. in 1901 as one of the eight charter franchises of the American League (AL), and played their home games at National Park until 1961. The franchise moved to Minnesota in 1961 and played their home games at Metropolitan Stadium until 1981. They played their home games at the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome from 1982 to 2009. The Twins moved to their current home, Target Field, in 2010.
The team’s origins in Washington
The Minnesota Twins began life as the Washington Senators, one of the American League’s eight charter franchises. The franchise was established in Washington, D.C. in 1901. The Senators played their home games at American League Park (later known as National Park and currently named Nationals Park) until 1907, when they moved to newly built Griffith Stadium.
The team’s move to Minnesota
The Minnesota Twins are a Major League Baseball team that play in the American League Central division. The team was founded in Washington, D.C. in 1901 as the Washington Senators. The team moved to Minnesota in 1961 and became the Minnesota Twins. The Twins have played their home games at Target Field since 2010.
The team’s move to Minnesota was attributable to several factors. Among them was the unwillingness of D.C. officials to finance a new stadium for the team, as the Senators’ home ballpark at the time, Griffith Stadium, was in poor condition and outdated. In addition, the Twin Cities area had a significantly larger population than Washington, D.C., which made it a more attractive market for a major league baseball team. Finally, Minnesota had a rich baseball tradition, dating back to the 19th century when Minneapolis and St. Paul each had minor league teams.

Target Field
Target Field is a baseball park in the downtown area of Minneapolis, Minnesota. It is the home ballpark of the Minnesota Twins, the state’s Major League Baseball (MLB) franchise. The venue opened in 2010 and cost $520 million to build.
The ballpark’s history
In 2006, the Minnesota Legislature approved funding for a new ballpark for the Minnesota Twins, after the team threatened to move out of state if a replacement for the aging Metrodome was not built. Replacing the Metrodome was a contentious issue in the Twin Cities; supporters argued that the Twins had been among the worst-supported teams in Major League Baseball (MLB) while playing in the Metrodome, and that a new ballpark would lead to an increase in revenue and attendance. Opponents decried publicly funding a stadium when corporate support of the team was strong, and when there were other pressing needs in the state. The Minnesota House of Representatives passed legislation funding a new stadium by an overwhelming margin, but the bill stalled in the Senate amid concerns about its cost.
A breakthrough came when avowed stadium opponent Mike Freeman, then Hennepin County Commissioner, negotiated a deal with Twins owner Carl Pohlad that allowed for public funding of up to $350 million (42% of total construction costs) while capping public exposure at that amount. The bill passed both houses of the legislature, and Governor Tim Pawlenty signed it into law on May 20, 2006.
Construction began later that year and was completed in 2010. The first regular season game was played on April 12, 2010, against the Boston Red Sox.
