Europe

There has never been an NBA team based in Europe

The NBA has never had a team located in Europe, although there has been significant interest in the idea over the years. In order to have an NBA team based in Europe, a number of challenges would need to be overcome, including the time difference between the United States and Europe and the travel required for teams to play each other. Additionally, the NBA would need to find a way to grow its fan base in Europe, as well as create enough interest in the sport to sustain a professional team.

The NBA has played several exhibition games in Europe

The National Basketball Association (NBA) has played several exhibition games in Europe. The first NBA regular season game was played in London on October 6, 1993, between the Washington Bullets and the Atlanta Hawks. The game was played at the now-defunct Wembley Arena.

In 1999, the NBA returned to London with two games between the Toronto Raptors and the then-Vancouver Grizzlies. These games were played at the O2 Arena, which is now known as The O2.

In October 2007, the Boston Celtics and the then-New Jersey Nets played two preseason games at The O2. In March 2008, the then-New Orleans Hornets played a regular season game against the San Antonio Spurs at The O2. This was notable as it was the first time an NBA game had been played in England outside of London.

In January 2011, the then-New York Knicks and then- Detroit Pistons played two regular season games at The O2. In October 2011, the Los Angeles Lakers and then-Minnesota Timberwolves also played two exhibition games at The O2 as part of NBA Europe Live presented by BBVA.

The most recent games took place in 2013 when the then-Atlanta Hawks faced off against the Brooklyn Nets (formerly New Jersey Nets) on January 16 and 17. These games were also held at The O2.

The NBA has held training camps in Europe

The NBA has held training camps in Europe four times: in Treviso, Italy, in 2002; in London, England, in 2007; Paris, France in 2010; and Istanbul, Turkey in 2012. The first two instances saw teams travel to Europe before the start of the regular season to play several exhibition games against each other as well as European club teams. In 2010 and 2012, the NBA organized a preseason tournament featuring four teams playing each other once; each team played two games total.

The NBA has played several exhibition games in Asia, most recently in China and the Philippines. plans to play two regular-season games in China during the 2017-18 season as part of its ongoing effort to expand its global reach. In October 2014, the Houston Rockets and the Sacramento Kings played the first ever NBA game in India, albeit an exhibition game. The game was held at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium in New Delhi.

The NBA has held training camps in Asia

The NBA has held training camps in Asia since the 2013 offseason. In 2014, the Houston Rockets held their training camp in The Philippines, followed by the Sacramento Kings in 2015. The Indiana Pacers and Denver Nuggets both held their 2016 training camps in India, with the Brooklyn Nets hosting their camp in China that same year. In 2017, the Golden State Warriors became the first team to hold their entire training camp in China, as they prepared for their preseason games against the Minnesota Timberwolves.

There is currently one NBA team based in Asia, the Houston Rockets. The Rockets have been based in Asia since 1971, when they were founded as an expansion team. The team has won two NBA Championships, in 1994 and 1995.
