He was also a member of the winning team at WWE’s 2006 Battle of the Billionaires pay-per-view event.

Following his release from WWE in 2010, Carlito toured the independent circuit before returning to Puerto Rico to focus on his family and business ventures. In 2016, he made his return to wrestling when he joined Puerto Rican promotion World Wrestling Council (WWC).

Early Life

Carlito was born Carlos Edwin Colon Jr. on February 21, 1979, in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. His father, “Invader 1” Carlos Colon Sr., is a WWE Hall of Famer and one of the most popular wrestlers in Puerto Rican history. Growing up, Colon Jr. dreamed of following in his father’s footsteps and becoming a professional wrestler himself someday.

In 1998, at the age of 19, he finally got his chance when he was signed by WWE. He was sent to train at their developmental facility, Ohio Valley Wrestling (OVW), where he quickly began to make a name for himself. In 2003, he made his television debut on WWE’s SmackDown brand under the name “Carlito Caribbean Cool.” His character was that of a smooth-talking, womanizing playboy from the island of Puerto Rico who enjoyed drinking rum and smoking cigars.

Carlito quickly became one of SmackDown’s most popular Superstars, winning his first WWE Championship (the United States Championship) just four months after debuting on the brand. He would go on to hold that title twice more before being drafted to Raw in 2005. On Raw, Carlito had several more high-profile feuds and championship victories before being released from WWE in 2010.

Professional Wrestling Career

Carlito made his professional wrestling debut in Puerto Rico’s World Wrestling Council (WWC) in 1998. Carlito soon found success as a singles competitor, becoming a three-time WWC Universal Heavyweight Champion and holding the title for almost two years. In 2003, Carlito was hired by the World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE).

After being assigned to Ohio Valley Wrestling (OVW), Carlito made his WWE television debut on the November 11, 2004 episode of SmackDown!, defeating John Cena in a Rap Battle. He quickly ascended up the ranks of WWE, winning his first title, the United States Championship, just six weeks after his main roster debut. Carlito went on to have multiple championship reigns throughout his WWE career, winning the Intercontinental Championship twice and the World Tag Team Championship once. He was also a Money in the Bank winner and a two-time Slammy Award winner. After nine years with WWE, Carlito was released from his contract in 2014.
