Medvedev began taking tennis lessons when he was four years old and soon began competing in junior tournaments. He won his first international junior tournament in Egypt when he was 10 years old.

Medvedev rose through the ranks of the junior ranks quickly and won the junior Wimbledon title in 2013. He turned professional later that year and made his Grand Slam debut at the 2014 Australian Open. Medvedev has since gone on to establish himself as one of the top players on the ATP Tour, winning 19 singles titles (including two Masters 1000 titles) and reaching a career-high ranking of No. 3 in the world in September 2019.
