The National Basketball Association All-Star Game is an annual exhibition basketball game hosted by the National Basketball Association (NBA). It is the showcase event of the NBA All-Star Weekend, a three-day event which goes from Friday to Sunday. The All-Star Game was first played at the Boston Garden on March 2, 1951. The game was conceived by Boston Celtics owner Walter Brown as a way to boost interest in professional basketball and raise money for charity.
The inaugural game raised $15,000 for the region’s unemployed; however, since then it has become one of the most watched sporting events on television, drawing in millions of viewers every year. This year’s game will be broadcast on TNT for the seventeenth consecutive year.
The format of the game has been unchanged since its inception. Twelve players from each conference (Western and Eastern) are selected by a combination of fans, players, and coaches. These 24 All-Stars are then divided into two teams that compete against each other in a four quarter game. The teams are currently selected by two captains who are voted on by the fans; in previous years, the head coaches from each conference’s team with the best record were given the honor of selecting their team’s rosters.
Since its inception, the game has been held in various arenas across North America; however, it has primarily been held in larger cities with a significant NBA fan base. Chicago hosted the game four times between 1951 and 1988; New York City hosted three times between 1954 and 1998; and Los Angeles hosted six times between 1963 and 2011. Every city that has hosted an All-Star Game has also hosted at least one NBA Finals series in which their home team was a participant; eleven cities have hosted both events in consecutive years.
After 51 years in various arenas across North America, including three separate stints at Madison Square Garden in New York City and ten years at Staples Center in Los Angeles, All-Star Weekend will return to Chicago for the first time since 1988.
