Introduction

On November 6, 1869, Rutgers and Princeton played what was billed as the first ever college football game. However, it wasn’t until November 20, 1876 that representatives from Yale, Columbia, Princeton, and Rutgers met to codify the rules of the game and officially created the Intercollegiate Football Association. College football was born.

Interestingly enough, there were a handful of professional football teams kicking around before there was an official National Football League. One such team was the Allegheny Athletic Association of Pittsburgh, which was founded in 1892. The Allegheny team routinely hired the best players from local colleges (including future Hall of Famers Pudge Heffelfinger and Harold Ballin) and paid them to play for their club team.

In 1898 another group of midwestern teams formed the Western Pennsylvania Professional Football Circuit. This league existed for three years and featured such teams as the Latrobe Athletic Association (founded by golfer/coach/innovator John Brallier), Greensburg Athletic Association, McKeesport Olympians, Washington & Jefferson Presidents, Canonsburg Athletic Club…and yes, even the Allegheny Athletic Association. These teams played against each other and against semi-pro and various college teams throughout Pennsylvania, Ohio and West Virginia.
