The Birth of Professional Football
Professional football in the United States can trace its roots back to the late 1800s, when a handful of colleges began playing organized games against one another. In 1892, a group of professional teams based in Pennsylvania and New York formed the first professional league, called the Inter-State Professional Football Association. This league only lasted three years before it folded, but it laid the groundwork for future professional leagues.
In 1920, another professional league was formed, called the American Professional Football Association. This league would eventually change its name to the National Football League (NFL) and become the most successful and popular professional football league in the world. The NFL was initially made up of just 11 teams, all based in cities in the Midwest and Northeast United States. Today, there are 32 teams in the NFL, spread out across the country.
