History
The first U.S. National Championship, precursor to the U.S. Open, was played in 1881 on grass courts at the Newport Casino, in Newport, Rhode Island. That first tournament was not open to professional players. The first U.S. Open was played four years later in 1885 on the same grass courts of the Newport Casino. The event was played there until 1974 when it shifted to the West Side Tennis Club, Forest Hills, New York. It remained there until 1978 when the event shifted to its current home at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, in Flushing Meadows, New York.
The first US Open
The first US Open was played in 1881 on an outdoor grass court at the Newport Casino, Newport, Rhode Island. The men’s singles tournament was won by Richard Sears who defeated James Dwight in the final in straight sets. There were 22 men’s singles entries and 12 pairs in the men’s doubles event. Clarence Clark and Wilmer Allison were the champions, defeating Howard Kinsey and Wilfred Bunn in the final two sets to one. The first women’s singles tournament was not held until 1887.
The game has changed a lot since then – today there are hard courts, artificial lighting, prize money, BUT grass courts are still used at Wimbledon!
