The Hall of Fame was originally located in New York City
The National Football League’s Hall of Fame is a hall of fame and museum devoted to professional football. The Hall’s mission is to “Honor the Heroes of the Game, Preserve its History, Promote its Values & Celebrate Excellence EVERYWHERE.” The Hall of Fame Village is an 94-acre sports, entertainment and media destination in Canton, Ohio.
The idea for the Hall of Fame originated with Canton Evening News sports editor Jim Reid in August 1959. Reid suggested that the league promote itself by establishing a permanent hall of fame and museum. The idea was brought to NFL Commissioner Bert Bell, who turned it over to league staff members George Taliaferro and Vince Lombardi for study. Lombardi was most concerned with finding a suitable location for the Hall of Fame Museum because he believed that it should be located where professional football first began – in Canton, Ohio.
The original Pro Football Hall of Fame was located in Canton’s McKinley Grand Hotel when it opened on September 7, 1963. The first inductees were James Thorpe, Red Grange, Bronko Nagurski, Smokey Joe Wood and George Halas. In 1970, the relocated to Miami’s Gate D at the Orange Bowl due to weather and crowding concerns at the original location. After only six years in South Florida, however, attendance dwindled and forced the closure of Gate D. In 1971, plans were made to move back to Canton permanently after Florida voters rejected a bond issue that would have funded a long-term lease at the Orange Bowl.
On September 18, 1971, construction began on a new home for the Hall – now known as Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium – which sits adjacent to Fawcett Stadium on the campus of Johnson Controls Pro Football Center (formerly McKinley High School). The new $8 million Museum building opened in August 1978 during pre-season ceremonies for Super Bowl XII.[1] On April 20th 2015 ground was broke forHall Of Fame Village which is currently set to open in phases starting 2019/2020 season. The plaza outside Tom Benson Stadium will feature a 22 foot tall bronze statue of former Green Bay Packers player Ray Nitschke.[2]
The Induction Process
The National Football League Hall of Fame is the hall of fame for professional American football. The Hall of Fame’s Mission is to “Honor the Heroes of the Game, Preserve its History, Promote its Values & Celebrate Excellence Everywhere.”
The Hall of Fame induction process is conducted by the Pro Football Hall of Fame Board of Selectors
The 34-person selection committee meets each year in the months prior to the Super Bowl to elect between four and eight new members. The committee is made up of one representative from each NFL city, 16 at-large selectors, and a representative from the Pro Football Writers Association.
To be eligible for election, a player or coach must have been retired for at least five years. A player must have played in at least five seasons, while a coach must have coached for at least 10 years. To be elected posthumously, a player or coach must have been deceased for at least six months.
The voting process begins with each selector narrowing the list of eligible players down to 25 names. Each selector then submits a ballot with 10 names on it to the Hall of Fame’s Board of Trustees. The trustees then review the ballots and narrow the list down to 15 finalists, which is announced in November.
The 15 finalists are then voted on by the full selection committee during Super Bowl week. A player or coach must receive 80% of votes cast to be elected to the Hall of Fame. If no one receives 80% of votes cast, then the top vote-getter is inducted into the Hall of Fame.
The Hall of Fame induction process is open to any eligible player, coach, or contributor
The Hall of Fame induction process begins with the selection of an individual to be on the ballot. An individual must be retired from professional football for at least five years before he is eligible to be on the ballot. However, there is no waiting period for coaches and contributors (e.g., owners, general managers). The Hall of Fame Selection Committee, a group of media members who cover the NFL, meets annually in February to discuss and select individuals who will be on the ballot. A maximum of five individuals can be elected each year.
Once an individual is selected to be on the ballot, he is then evaluated by the Hall of Fame Selection Committee using a set of criteria. The criteria are as follows:
-First and foremost, a Hall of Famer must have made an impact on the game of professional football. This includes, but is not limited to, players who have set records, changed rules, etc.
-A Hall of Famer must also exhibit a high level of sportsmanship both on and off the field.
-Lastly, a player’s character must be taken into consideration when evaluating him for enshrinement into the Hall of Fame.
