Cooperstown, New York
On this day in 1939, the Baseball Hall of Fame opens in Cooperstown, New York. The brainchild of Stephen Carlton Clark, a former State Supreme Court judge and avid baseball fan, the museum was originally conceived as a way to honor Alexander Cartwright, considered by many to be the father of baseball. However, after further research revealed that there were no existing records documenting Cartwright’s specific contributions to the game, Clark instead decided to focus on honoring all of baseball’s greats in one location.
The first induction ceremony took place on June 12, 1939, with Ty Cobb, Babe Ruth, Honus Wagner, Christy Mathewson and Walter Johnson being named as the inaugural class. Since then, more than 300 players have been inducted into the Hall of Fame. In addition to its many exhibits on the history of baseball and biographies of its greats, the museum also houses the world’s largest collection of baseball memorabilia.

While Cartwright is generally credited with inventing baseball, there is some evidence that the game may have originated in England. The first recorded reference to a game similar to baseball was made in 1744, when an English journalist described a game called “base-ball” that was played on an open field.
