The NBA Finals are the annual championship series of the National Basketball Association (NBA). The Eastern and Western conference champions play a best-of-seven game series to determine the league champion. The winning team of the series receives the Larry O’Brien Championship Trophy.

The NBA Finals were initially structured in 1947 to include three tied games, which subsequently necessitated a Game 7 in order to determine a winner. When the first two tied games occurred in 1950 and 1951, respectively, the league introduced the now-standard 2–2–1–1–1 format (the team with home-court advantage plays Games 1, 2, 5 and 7 at home), which has been used ever since. As of 2019, the Finals have used this format nine times.
