The Boston Celtics are an American professional basketball team based in Boston, Massachusetts. The Celtics compete in the National Basketball Association (NBA) as a member of the league’s Eastern Conference Atlantic Division. Founded in 1946 as one of the league’s original eight teams, the franchise played 66 seasons of competitive basketball before suspending operations from 1968 to 1974. The Celtics reinstated themselves in 1975, after which they consigned themselves to mediocrity for much of the next two decades; compiling mediocre records in 19 of their next 29 seasons.
Since the turn of the 21st century, however, the Celtics have forged a return to prominence; winning 9 division titles and 8 conference championships between 2001 and 2017. Prior to their springtime dynasty revitalization, led by head coach Rick Pitino and stars Antoine Walker and Paul Pierce, the franchise had suffered through 14 consecutive non-winning seasons (1992–2006), the longest such streak in NBA history at that time. Since winning their 16th NBA championship in 2008–09, the Celtics have struggled to regain playoff relevance; missing out on postseason competition entirely from 2015 onwards despite multiple promising campaigns.
The Golden State Warriors
The Golden State Warriors are an American professional basketball team based in San Francisco. The Warriors compete in the National Basketball Association (NBA) as a member of the league’s Western Conference Pacific Division. Founded in 1946 in Philadelphia, the Warriors relocated to the San Francisco Bay Area in 1962 and took the city’s name, before changing its geographic moniker to Golden State in 1971. They play their home games at the Chase Center.
The Warriors won the 1967 NBA Finals, which was their first NBA championship after relocating to San Francisco. It was also their only title prior to winning three more championships in 2015, 2017, and 2018 with their current core group of players, which includes Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, Kevin Durant, Draymond Green, and DeMarcus Cousins. This run of success made the Warriors assets of considerable value; they are worth an estimated $3.1 billion according to Forbes in 2019, making them the most valuable NBA franchise ever.
