George Halas is a legendary figure in the world of professional football. He is the namesake of the Chicago Bears, one of the most iconic franchises in all of sports. He is also the NFL’s all-time leader in wins, with 324.
Halas was born in Chicago in 1895 and was a star athlete in high school, playing football, baseball and basketball. He went on to compete in track and field at the University of Illinois, where he set school records in the shot put and discus throw.
After college, Halas joined the Marines and served in World War I. He then returned to Chicago and took a job with a local company called A.E. Staley Manufacturing. It was there that he was first introduced to professional football; one of his co-workers was already playing for the Decatur Staleys, one of the league’s original teams.
In 1920, Halas helped form a new professional football league, the American Professional Football Association (later renamed the National Football League). He then bought the Decatur Staleys and moved them to Chicago, where they became the Chicago Bears.
As a coach and owner, Halas quickly established himself as one of the biggest names in football. His teams won six NFL championships (1920, 1921, 1932, 1933, 1940, 1941), including two Super Bowls (1986, 1990). In addition to his324 wins (and 151 losses), Halas has been inducted into both the Pro Football Hall of Fame and the College Football Hall of Fame.
Tom Landry is the NFL coach with the most wins. He coached the Dallas Cowboys for 29 seasons, winning 250 games. He also won two Super Bowls with the Cowboys.
