Which NFL Coaches Will Be Fired?
It’s that time of year again: NFL coaches are getting fired left and right. Here are the latest predictions on which coaches will be shown the door.
NFL Coaches on the Hot Seat
Every NFL season, a handful of coaches are let go by their teams. This can be due to a variety of reasons, such as poor performance, player misconduct, or a disagreement with management. This year, there are a few coaches who seem to be on the hot seat.
Jay Gruden, Washington Redskins
Jay Gruden is in his sixth season as the Head Coach of the Washington Redskins, and he has a record of 35-44-1. The Redskins have only made the playoffs once under Gruden, and they were quickly bounced out of the Wild Card round by the Seattle Seahawks. The Redskins have failed to make any significant improvement under Gruden, and it appears that his time with the team may be coming to an end.
Jason Garrett, Dallas Cowboys
As the Dallas Cowboys’ disappointing season comes to an end, all eyes are on head coach Jason Garrett and whether or not he will be back with the team next year. Garrett has been with the Cowboys for nine seasons, but has only led the team to the playoffs three times and has never made it past the divisional round.
Owner Jerry Jones has been noncommittal about Garrett’s future, saying that he will “evaluate everything” at the end of the season. However, if the Cowboys miss the playoffs again, it is hard to see Jones keeping Garrett around. There have been reports that Jones has already begun reaching out to potential replacements, and it is only a matter of time before Garrett is shown the door.
Dan Quinn, Atlanta Falcons
Quinn’s seat is certainly the hottest among current NFL head coaches. After leading the Falcons to a Super Bowl appearance in 2016, Quinn has compiled a record of just 23-25 over the past three seasons, missing the playoffs each year. The Falcons started this season 1-7 before firing their offensive and defensive coordinators, but they have since won three straight games. Even with the recent improvement, it seems unlikely that Quinn will be back with the team in 2020.
Coaches Who Deserve Another Year
Many NFL teams are currently in playoff contention, but there are also a good amount of teams that have already been eliminated from the playoffs. For those teams, their focus has shifted to next season. One of the first things that needs to be decided is who will be the head coach. Some coaches have already been fired, but there are also a number of coaches who deserve another year.
Bill Belichick, New England Patriots
Belichick has been head coach of the Patriots since 2000, and during that time, the team has racked up an impressive record of 225-79-0. In that timespan, they’ve won six Super Bowls, appeared in ten AFC Championship games, and Belichick has been named Coach of the Year three times. Needless to say, he’s had a lot of success in New England.
However, some have begun to wonder if Belichick is beginning to lose his touch. The Patriots missed the playoffs this past season for the first time since 2008, and they looked sluggish and disorganized at times during the year. Belichick will be 69 years old next season, and there’s a chance that he could retire soon.
If Belichick does decide to step down from his head coaching position, it would be a huge loss for the Patriots. He’s been one of the best coaches in NFL history, and it’s impossible to overstate how much he’s meant to the success of the franchise.
Sean McVay, Los Angeles Rams
Sean McVay is one of the best young head coaches in the NFL, and he deserves another year at the helm of the Rams. Despite a disappointing 2019 season, McVay has led the Rams to two straight NFC West titles and a Super Bowl appearance. His innovative offensive schemes have made the Rams one of the most dynamic offenses in the league, and he has done a good job of developing young talent. The Rams need to make some changes this offseason, but McVay should be back in 2020.
Pete Carroll, Seattle Seahawks
Pete Carroll has been the head coach of the Seattle Seahawks since 2010, and has led the team to seven straight winning seasons. He has also won five division titles and one Super Bowl. In spite of all of this success, there have been rumors that Carroll could be on the hot seat.
The Seahawks have failed to make it back to the Super Bowl since they won it in 2014, and they have been eliminated in the first round of the playoffs in each of the last two seasons. Additionally, the team has had some high-profile player departures in recent years, including safety Earl Thomas and defensive end Michael Bennett.
Given all of this, it would not be surprising if Carroll was let go after this season. However, he has shown an ability to adapt his coaching style to his personnel, and the Seahawks still have a talented roster. If they can make a deep playoff run this year, Carroll may keep his job.
Coaches Who Should Be Fired
NFL teams have already started making changes to their coaching staffs. A few weeks ago, the New York Jets fired their head coach, Adam Gase. The Jets are not the only team that has made a change, but they are the most notable. Here are a few more coaches who should be fired.
Marvin Lewis, Cincinnati Bengals
Marvin Lewis has coached the Bengals to a losing record in each of the last three seasons, and the team has missed the playoffs in each of those years. In 2016, the Bengals went 6-9-1, their worst record since 2010.
Lewis’ contract is up after this season, and it’s looking increasingly likely that he will be replaced. If the Bengals do fire Lewis, it will be interesting to see if they make a change at quarterback as well. Andy Dalton has been with the team for Lewis’ entire tenure, but he has failed to win a playoff game in six tries.
Hue Jackson, Cleveland Browns
Hue Jackson has been the head coach of the Cleveland Browns since 2016. In that time, he has compiled a record of 3-36-1, which is the worst record in Browns history. He has also been embroiled in several controversies, including publicly criticizing players and arguing with reporters.
Given his poor record and the controversies he has been involved in, it is not surprising that there have been calls for Jackson to be fired. However, Browns owner Jimmy Haslam has said that he will not fire Jackson during the season. It remains to be seen whether Jackson will be fired after the season, but it seems likely that he will be one of the coaches who is let go.
Vance Joseph, Denver Broncos
Vance Joseph’s first year as head coach of the Denver Broncos was nothing short of a disaster. The team finished with a 5-11 record and looked lost on both sides of the ball for most of the season. Joseph’s biggest problem is that he doesn’t seem to have a plan for how to turn things around. The Broncos are in danger of becoming one of the worst teams in the NFL if Joseph can’t figure things out quickly.
