Even though the Houston Texans have only been in the NFL since 2002, they have already made a name for themselves. The Texans have never won a Super Bowl, but they did make it to the playoffs in 2011 and 2012.

The Houston Texans are a professional football team based in Houston, Texas. They are members of the South Division of the American Football Conference (AFC) in the National Football League (NFL). The Texans joined the NFL in 2002 as an expansion team after Houston’s previous franchise, the Houston Oilers, relocated to Nashville, Tennessee (now the Tennessee Titans), where they were renamed the Tennessee Titans. The team plays its home games at NRG Stadium in Houston.

The Texans have gone on to win AFC South division titles in 2011, 2012, 2015, 2016, and 2018. In 2012, they made their maiden appearance in the playoffs under new head coach Gary Kubiak; however, they were defeated by the eventual Super Bowl champion Baltimore Ravens in the AFC Divisional round. The following year, Kubiak led them to an AFC Wild Card playoff victory over the Cincinnati Bengals before falling to the New England Patriots in the AFC Divisional round for a second straight season. The Texans won consecutive AFC South titles again under Kubiak in 2015 and 2016 after he guided them to 9–7 marks in both seasons. After another 9–7 effort led by first-year head coach Bill O’Brien in 2017, his third as head coach, they again captured consecutive division titles for a third time with an 11–5 record under new head coach Bill O’Brien in 2018 despite having starting quarterback Deshaun Watson out for most of the season with a torn ACL.

In 2019, Deshaun Watson had another great season leading his team to a playoff berth with a 10-6 record but unfortunately lost to eventual Super Bowl champions Kansas City Chiefs 22-21 in overtime during the Wild Card Round.

Why the Texans have never won a Super Bowl

While the Houston Texans have only been in franchise since 2002, they have been consistently competitive, making the playoffs six times and winning their division four times. So why haven’t they been able to win a Super Bowl?

Part of the reason may be that they’ve never had a truly great quarterback. Matt Schaub was their best QB during their early years, but he was never able to take them to the next level. Since then, they’ve had a carousel of mediocre quarterbacks including Brock Osweiler, Ryan Fitzpatrick, and Tom Savage.

Another issue is that their defense has always been good, but never great. They’ve had some very good individual players like J.J. Watt and Jadeveon Clowney, but they’ve never had a top-ranked defense overall.

Lastly, the AFC South has generally been one of the weaker divisions in the NFL over the past few years, so the Texans have often benefited from playing in a relatively easy division. However, this past season they were finally dethroned by the Indianapolis Colts who had a breakout year led by young quarterback Andrew Luck.

So while the Texans have certainly been a good team over the years, they’ve never quite put it all together and become a truly great team that can win a Super Bowl.
