The franchise was founded in 1959 as a replacement for the previous Buffalo Bills that had played in the All-America Football Conference (AAFC) from 1946 to 1949. The AAFC Bills won two championships, in 1946 and in 1948. The club joined the NFL as part of the AFL–NFL merger in 1970, and played their home games at War Memorial Stadium from 1971 through 1972, sharing it with the Buffalo Braves basketball team until 1972 when that franchise moved to San Diego as the San Diego Clippers. They returned to league play later that year with another AFL squad, which would eventually be merged into today’s Miami Dolphins after financial woes ended both teams’ time in Buffalo following the 1971 season.
Upon returning to league play with a more traditional football squad following their time as an AFL expansion team, they would go on to make four consecutive Super Bowl appearances from 1991 through 1994 under head coach Marv Levy, becoming only one of two teams ever (the other being the New England Patriots) to do so and losing all four contests. However, they have yet to win a Super Bowl championship game, losing all four of their attempts by a combined margin of 54 points (an average margin of defeat of 13.5 points per game). They are 0–4 overall in Super Bowl appearances and have not won a conference title since 1965 when they were members of the American Football League
