NFL Teams That Have Never Won a Super Bowl
There have been 54 Super Bowls in NFL history, and some teams have been more successful than others. The New England Patriots have won the most Super Bowls with six, followed by the Pittsburgh Steelers with six. But there are a few teams that have never won a Super Bowl. Who are they?
Arizona Cardinals
The Arizona Cardinals are a professional American football franchise based in the Phoenix metropolitan area. The Cardinals compete in the National Football League (NFL) as a member club of the league’s National Football Conference (NFC) West division. The Cardinals were founded as the Morgan Athletic Club in 1898, and are the oldest continuously run professional football team in the United States. The Cardinals play their home games at State Farm Stadium, which opened in 2006 and is located in Glendale, Arizona. Since 1988, the Cardinals have been headquartered in Tempe, Arizona.
The team has had several logos throughout its history. The first logo was an interlocking “AC” used on neckties and other promotional items. In 1947, the team switched to an interlocking “SC” logo before adopting their current wordmark logo in 1960. The Cardinals have won two NFL championships, both while they were based in Chicago. They defeated the Philadelphia Eagles 17–7 to win their first title on January 6, 1947; they then won their second title over the Dallas Cowboys 27–17 on January 2, 1952 with most of that team’s roster having joined the organization via a mass exodus from another recently defunct organization, the Cleveland Browns.
Detroit Lions
The Detroit Lions are a professional American football team based in Detroit, Michigan. They are members of the North Division of the National Football Conference (NFC) in the National Football League (NFL), and play their home games at Ford Field in Downtown Detroit.
The Lions have not won a Super Bowl as of yet, but they have won four NFL Championships, all before the Super Bowl era.
Houston Texans
The Houston Texans are a professional football team based in Houston, Texas. The Texans compete in the National Football League (NFL) as a member club of the American Football Conference (AFC) South division. The team plays its home games at NRG Stadium.
The Texans were established in 2002 as the Houston expansion team after the NFL granted an expansion franchise to then-owner Bob McNair. While the Texans struggled in their early years, they reached the playoffs for the first time in 2011 behind a defense that finished second in points allowed. The Texans have gone on to win AFC South titles in 2012, 2015, 2016, and 2018. They have also appeared in AFC Wild Card Playoffs games in 2011, 2012, 2016, and 2017.
NFL Teams That Have Won a Super Bowl
The National Football League (NFL) is a professional American football league. It was formed in 1920 as the American Professional Football Association (APFA) before renaming itself the National Football League for the 1922 season. The NFL is one of the four major North American professional sports leagues, which includes Major League Baseball (MLB), the National Basketball Association (NBA), and the National Hockey League (NHL).
Green Bay Packers
The Green Bay Packers are a professional American football team based in Green Bay, Wisconsin. The Packers compete in the National Football League (NFL) as a member club of the league’s National Football Conference (NFC) North division. It is the third-oldest franchise in the NFL, dating back to 1919, and is the only non-profit, community-owned major league professional sports team based in the United States. Home games have been played at Lambeau Field since 1957.
The Packers are the last of the “small town teams” which were common in the NFL during the league’s early days of 1929–1959. Founded in 1919 by Earl “Curly” Lambeau and George Whitney Calhoun, the franchise traces its lineage to other semi-professional teams in Green Bay dating back to 1896. Between 1919 and 1920, the Packers competed against other semi-pro clubs from around Wisconsin and Michigan, before joining the American Professional Football Association (APFA), now known as the National Football League (NFL), in 1921. Although Green Bay is by far the smallest major league professional sports market in North America, Forbes ranked the Packers as being sixth among all NFL franchises by value for 2008 ($1.02 billion).
The Packers have won 13 league championships (9 NFL Championships and 4 Super Bowls), more than any other team, with nine pre–Super Bowl NFL titles and four Super Bowl victories. They won the first two Super Bowls in 1967 and 1968 and were led by Hall of Fame coach Vince Lombardi. The Packers also won Super Bowls XXXI and XXXII under head coach Mike Holmgren; they returned to winning Super Bowls XLV and XLVIII under current head coach Mike McCarthy following several season with Ted Thompson as GM.
New England Patriots
The New England Patriots have won six Super Bowls, the most of any team in NFL history. The Patriots have also appeared in ten Super Bowls, the most of any team in NFL history. The Patriots have also won seventeen AFC Championships, the most of any team in NFL history.
New York Giants
The New York Giants have won four Super Bowls in their history. They won their first Super Bowl in 1986, beating the Denver Broncos 39-20. They won their second Super Bowl in 1990, beating the Buffalo Bills 20-19. They won their third Super Bowl in 2007, beating the New England Patriots 17-14. And they won their fourth and most recent Super Bowl in 2011, beating the Patriots again, this time by a score of 21-17.
Conclusion
As of the 2019 season, there are 11 NFL teams who have never won a Super Bowl. These teams are the Buffalo Bills, Cincinnati Bengals, Cleveland Browns, Detroit Lions, Houston Texans, Jacksonville Jaguars, Los Angeles Chargers, Minnesota Vikings, Philadelphia Eagles, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and the Tennessee Titans.
