NFL Players by State

The NFL is a highly competitive environment, with teams regularly vying for the top spot. In order to be the best, you need to have the best players. But where do these players come from? It turns out that the vast majority of NFL players come from just a handful of states. Let’s take a look at the top five states for NFL players.

California

Not only does California produce the most NFL players of any state, but it also leads the way in producing NFL quarterbacks. In the 2016 season, there were a total of 78 California-born NFL players, 12 of whom were quarterbacks. That’s more than 15% of all NFL quarterbacks!

Texas is second in terms of total NFL players born in the state, with 53. Florida is third with 50. Pennsylvania is fourth with 42, and Ohio rounds out the top 5 with 39.

Florida

Florida has produced the most NFL players of any state, with over 700 players coming from the Sunshine State. California is second on the list, with Texas and Georgia rounding out the top four. Alabama, Ohio, and Louisiana are also among the top 10 states for producing NFL talent.

Texas

Not only does Texas produce the most NFL players overall, but it also boast the most players of any state in almost every position. Only Wyoming can say they have more quarterbacks per capita than Texas. The Lone Star State has twice as many defensive linemen per capita as Louisiana, which is in second place.

Pennsylvania

Pennsylvania produces more NFL players than any other state, according to a 24/7 Wall St. analysis of data from the NFL Players Association. There are currently 321 NFL players from Pennsylvania, nearly 100 more than California, which has the second-most players.

The state has sent at least two dozen players to the NFL every year since 2014, and had a record 41 players drafted into the league in 2018. That includes Pittsburgh Steelers rookie linebacker Devin Bush, who was selected 10th overall in this year’s draft.

In total, 24/7 Wall St. identified the states that have produced the most NFL players. For our analysis, we looked at data on every player in the league as of September 2018 provided by the NFL Players Association, the professional organization for football players in the NFL. We also considered each player’s high school and college team, as well as their position and current team, to determine their state of origin. Data on high school and college teams came from MaxPreps and Sports Reference respectively.

Ohio

Ohio has produced a number of NFL players, including some of the most famous names in the sport. Ohio State University has been particularly successful in churning out NFL talent, with a long list of Buckeyes who have gone on to have successful professional careers. Some of the most notable NFL players from Ohio include Pro Football Hall of Famers Jim Brown and Archie Griffin, as well as Super Bowl-winning quarterbacks Drew Brees and Ben Roethlisberger.

Conclusion

In conclusion, while California may produce the most NFL players overall, Texas has the most players per capita. This is likely due to the fact that Texas has a larger population than any other state in the Union. Nonetheless, California’s production of NFL talent is noteworthy and indicates that the state’s football programs are doing something right.
