It’s a question that has been asked for years: which states do not have an NFL team? The answer, as of 2020, is four.

Which States Do Not Have an NFL Team?

The states without an NFL team

There are a total of 50 states in the United States of America and of those 50 states, 9 of them do not have an NFL team. That means that 18.2% of US states do not have an NFL team. These 9 states are without an NFL team for a variety of reasons. Some states, like Alaska, don’t have the population to support an NFL team. Other states, like Texas, have multiple teams but the state is so large that it’s able to support multiple teams. Let’s take a look at these 9 states without an NFL team.

Alaska

Alaska is the largest state in the US, but it has no professional sports teams of any kind. There have been several attempts to bring an NFL team to Alaska, but none have been successful. The most recent effort was in 2006, when a group led by former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Steve Young tried to bring a team to Anchorage. The group proposed building a $600 million stadium, but the plan was ultimately rejected by the NFL.

Delaware

Delaware does not have an NFL team. In fact, it is one of only five states that do not have an NFL team. (The other four states are Alaska, Montana, North Dakota, and South Dakota.) Delaware is also the smallest state in the nation, so it’s not surprising that it doesn’t have an NFL team.

Hawaii

It’s hard to believe, but Hawaii is the only US state without an NFL team. There have been several attempts to start a team in Hawaii, but none have been successful. The most recent attempt was in 2015, when a group tried to bring the San Diego Chargers to Honolulu. However, the plan fell through when the Chargers decided to stay in San Diego.

There are several reasons why Hawaii doesn’t have an NFL team. First, it’s very isolated from the rest of the US. This makes it difficult for teams to travel to Hawaii for games, and also makes it hard for fans in Hawaii to watch games on TV or in person. Second, the time difference between Hawaii and the mainland US is three hours. This would mean that games would have to be played at odd hours, which would make it tough for fans to watch them. Finally, football is not as popular in Hawaii as it is in other parts of the US. This makes it difficult to find enough fans who would be willing to support a team financially.

Despite all of these obstacles, there are still some people who are hoping that an NFL team will someday call Hawaii home. For now, though, the state remains without a team.

Montana

Since Montana does not have an NFL team, many of its residents are passionate fans of teams from neighboring states, particularly the Seattle Seahawks and the Denver Broncos. Montana is the only state in the US without an NFL team, but it is home to several other professional sports teams, including the Missoula PaddleHeads minor league baseball team and the Great Falls Americans junior ice hockey team.

Oregon

Some fans of the National Football League (NFL) believe that their state does not have an team because it does not have a professional franchise. The fact is that every state has at least one NFL team.

Oregon is home to the Oregon Ducks, who compete in the NCAA’s Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS). The Ducks are members of the Pac-12 Conference and have appeared in bowl games in each of the last 11 seasons. They have won conference championships in 2000, 2001, 2002, 2004, 2009, 2010, 2012, and 2014.

Rhode Island

The smallest state in the US, Rhode Island, is also the only state without an NFL team. Although the state has a strong college football tradition, it has never had a professional team. Rumors have circulated for years that the New England Patriots might one day relocate to Providence, but so far, nothing has come of them.

South Dakota

The Dakotas don’t have an NFL team, but they do have something better — the best universities in the country. In 2019, North Dakota State University and South Dakota State University were ranked first and second, respectively, in the nation for best value colleges by Money magazine. So, if you’re a fan of college football, these are the states for you.

Vermont

Vermont is one of the six New England states located in the northeastern United States. The state is bordered by Massachusetts to the south, New Hampshire to the east, New York to the west, and the Canadian province of Quebec to the north. Vermont is the second-least populous state in the US, with a population of just over 625,000. The capital city of Montpelier is the least populous state capital in the US, with a population of less than 8,000.

Vermont has no professional sports teams of any kind and has never had any. The closest team to Vermont is the NFL’s New England Patriots, who play their home games in Foxborough, Massachusetts, about 100 miles south of Vermont’s border.

Washington

Washington is the only state without an NFL team. Although there have been several failed attempts to bring a team to Washington, the state has never had an NFL franchise. There are several reasons for this, including the fact that Washington is not considered a major market for professional football. Additionally, the state has not had much success in supporting other professional sports teams in the past.

Conclusion

In conclusion, we have found that the states without an NFL team are Alaska, Hawaii, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Vermont, and Wyoming. We have also found that the District of Columbia does not have an NFL team.
