History
The Boston Celtics are an American professional basketball team based in Boston, Massachusetts. They play in the Atlantic Division of the Eastern Conference in the National Basketball Association (NBA). Founded in 1946 as one of the league’s original eight teams, the Celtics play their home games at TD Garden, which they share with the National Hockey League’s Boston Bruins. In 1957, Bill Russell joined the team as the franchise player, and he led them to eleven championships in thirteen seasons. With theirze ensuing victory streak of eight consecutive championships from 1959 to 1966, led by Russell and head coach Red Auerbach, Boston became known as the “Celtic Dynasty”. After enduring some lean years following Russell’s retirement in 1969, such as a 1974–75 season that saw just 21 wins from their starting five of Paul Silas, Dave Cowens, Jo Jo White Don Nelson and John Havlicek that culminated with a first round loss to Golden State (coincidentally coached by Al Attles who had been a player on that 1957 title team), Dick Motta took over head coaching duties and guided them back into prominence with an appearance in 1976 NBA Finals where they lost to Rick Barry’s upstart Golden State Warriors. TheLarry Bird era produced more victories thanks to creative shot-making and tenacious defense leading to an unprecedented four straight Eastern Conference crowns from 1980–83 while another modified version of Motta’s “Human Eraser” defense was applied during an eventual 1984 championship campaign spearheaded by Finals MVP Havlicek. An ill-fated decision made by then-general manager Jan van Breda Kolff to bring Leonard together with fellow All-Star forward Dominique Wilkins derailed what many felt was inevitable further success during the mid-’90s; subsequent moves made by new GM Chris Wallace at long last returned hope for banner eighteen via trades for prolific scorer Antoine Walker and defensive ace Tony Delk along with free agent signings including Bruce Bowen and Walter McCarty which finally materialized three more conference titles between 2001–02 Heading into 2008 off two disappointing losses in playoff series that saw All-Star forward Kevin Garnett acquire dinged up while superstar point guard point guard Rajon Rondo experienced playoff inexperience available talent seemed perilously close to not being good enough to win it all but things came together en route to set an NBA record by winning 66 games followed by claiming their seventeenth title with a hard-fought six game victory over their longtime rivalsLos Angeles Lakers.
