Roger Federer was born on August 8, 1981, in Basel, Switzerland. His parents, Robert and Lynette, ran a wholesale electronics business. Federer has one older sister, Diana. Growing up, Federer idolized tennis great Pete Sampras. At age eight, he began playing tennis and soon showed exceptional promise. When he was 10 years old, his coaches encouraged him to leave his home country to train in Zurich under Swiss tennis great Peter Carter.
Federer turned professional in 1998 at the age of 17.
