WWE Championships

The WWE has many different championships, and each superstar strives to be the one with the most wins. There are a few that have risen to the top and have won the most championships. Let’s take a look at the superstars with the most championship wins.

WWE World Heavyweight Championship

The WWE World Heavyweight Championship is a world heavyweight championship created and promoted by the American professional wrestling promotion WWE on the SmackDown brand. It is one of two world titles in the WWE, alongside the WWE Universal Championship that was created for the Raw brand as a result of the 2016 WWE draft. The current champion is Brock Lesnar, who is in his first reign.

The title was established under WWE’s then-current developmental territory Florida Championship Wrestling (FCW) in 2010 as a heavyweight championship open to both male and female wrestlers. The inaugural champion was Drew McIntyre. When FCW was brought up to the main roster as WWE NXT in August 2012, Kaitlyn became the inaugural NXT Women’s Champion and held both titles until December 2012 when she vacated the NXT Women’s Championship, leaving Bo Dallas as sole champion. In December 2013, the title was unified with its counterpart from Raw, being referred to as simply “WWE World Heavyweight Championship”. Then-United States Champion Dean Ambrose became champion; he held onto both titles until June 2014 when then-Intercontinental Champion Dolph Ziggler won a tournament to unify both titles.

Since its inception, there have been a total of seven reigns shared between six champions and one vacant period. CM Punk has been champion for 434 days (the longest individual reign) and Daniel Bryan has had two undisputed title reigns (the most), each lasting 245 days. At WrestleMania 32, WWE inducted “Stone Cold” Steve Austin into their Hall of Fame class of 2016; during his acceptance speech, Austin stated that he considered himself to be “the first”, unofficial holder of this title following his sixth WWF World Heavyweight Championship reign in 1999 which resulted in him unifying it with Mankind’s WWF Hardcore Championship following their match at Breakdown: In Your House to become undisputed world champion.

WWE Universal Championship

The WWE Universal Championship is a world heavyweight championship created and promoted by the American professional wrestling promotion WWE on the SmackDown brand. It is one of two world titles for WWE’s main roster, alongside the WWE Championship on Raw. The current champion is “The Fiend” Bray Wyatt, who is in his first reign.

The title was established as a second world championship in WWE following the split of the WWE Brand Extension in 2016. Then-WWE Champion Brock Lesnar was drafted to Raw that year, leaving SmackDown without a world title. As a result, then-SmackDown General Manager Daniel Bryan introduced the WWE World Championship as that brand’s top title at Backlash on September 11. A tournament was created to determine its inaugural champion, which was won by AJ Styles at the Elimination Chamber pay-per-view on February 12, 2017.

In August 2019, then-champion Brock Lesnar signed a new contract with Raw while still being under contract with Fox (the current broadcaster of SmackDown), which led to Vince McMahon voiding the title and stating that there would be a new champion crowned at Clash of Champions. At that event on September 15, “The Fiend” Bray Wyatt won a Universal Championship Match against Seth Rollins to become the new champion after cashing in his newly won “Fiend” Money in the Bank contract immediately following Rollins’ successful defense against Braun Strowman.

WWE Intercontinental Championship

The WWE Intercontinental Championship is a professional wrestling championship created and promoted by the American professional wrestling promotion WWE on the SmackDown brand. It is one of the secondary titles in WWE, alongside the United States Championship on Raw. The current champion is Big E, who is in his first reign.

The title was established in 1979 by Pat Patterson, with the intention of being a mid-level championship between the WWF World Heavyweight Championship and the WWF World Tag Team Championship. The inaugural champion was Ken Patera, who won a televised tournament to become the first champion. The Intercontinental Championship thus became the second oldest currently active championship in WWE after the world heavyweight title as it entered its 42nd year of existence in 2021.

In 2017, then-WWE Universal Champion Brock Lesnar defeated then-Intercontinental Champion The Miz in a title for title match at WrestleMania 34, making it two world championships under his belt and unifying both titles. However, as Lesnar held both titles simultaneously and Raw General Manager Kurt Angle refused to vacate one of them, he instead introduced a new universal title belt at Extreme Rules 2018 to again make both championships separate entities.

WWE United States Championship

The WWE United States Championship is a professional wrestling championship promoted by the American professional wrestling promotion WWE on the Raw brand. It was one of the original titles created when WWE was known as the World Wrestling Federation (WWF) in 1963 and has been defended in WWE off and on ever since. The title has also been promoted by other wrestling companies, most notably Extreme Championship Wrestling (ECW) during the 1990s, where it was known as the ECW Television Championship.

As of 2020, there have been 50 different champions, with John Cena holding the record for most reigns at five. The current champion is Andrade, who is in his first reign.

WWE Tag Team Championship

The WWE Tag Team Championship is a professional wrestling world tag team championship contested in WWE on the Raw, SmackDown, and ECW brands. It is one of WWE’s original championships, having been introduced in 1971 as the World Tag Team Championship of the World Wrestling Federation (WWF), and it remained until 2010 as such in its current promotion.

The title was first awarded to Buddy Rogers after he defeated Antonino Rocca in the finals of a tournament on April 25, 1963. The inaugural champion lost the title to Bruno Sammartino forty days later on May 17, 1963. It has since undergone several name changes due to company name changes and affiliation shifts; it was promoted as such as World Wide Wrestling Federation (WWWF) World Heavyweight Championship, Universal Wrestling Federation (UWF) World Heavyweight Championship, and World Bodybuilding Federation (WBF) Championship. In 2001, it was unified with the WCW World Heavyweight Championship as a result of that company’s closure and became known as the Undisputed WWE Championship. In 2002 after the first brand extension, it became exclusive to SmackDown! and was renamed WWE World Heavyweight Championship when Raw received their own world title called automatically called Raw World Heavyweight Championship which later became WWE Undisputed Title then simply WWE Title in 2005 until 2013 when it became exclusive to Raw once again. John “Bradshaw” Layfield became the inaugural holder of this version of the title after he defeated Brock Lesnar and Big Show in a triple threat match at Survivor Series on November 17, 2002. After Lesnar won a rematch against Show at Judgment Day on May 18, 2003 and another triple threat match against Kurt Angle and Show at Vengeance on July 27, it remained inactive until reactivated for SmackDown! when Rey Mysterio won a tournament at The Great American Bash On July 24, 2016, SmackDown General Manager Daniel Bryan announced that due to hereby losing their specific world championship title belts inRaw’s draft lottery selectable superstars Seth Rollins & Becky Lynch while also retaining Roman Reigns & Charlotte Flair respectively exclusive to their own respective brands with provision that they would be free agents able to challenge for any brand’s championships thus vacating both the then-WWE World Heavyweight & Divas Championships as well rendering them inactive once again until 2017’s WrestleMania 33 event where both were reintroduced with completely new designs as WWE Universal & Raw Women’s Championships exclusively for their namesake brands with Brock Lesnar being drafted as RAW’s inaugural champion while Charlotte Flair became inaugural champion of her namesake division & brand making her a Grand Slam Champion an unprecedented accomplishment in company history becoming first woman ever to do so & ninth superstar overall following Bob Backlund With this change DragonGate Open The Dream Gate Championship now becomes only other professional wrestling championship still promoted with same name & design since its creation in 2004 following NWA World Heavyweight Championship’s change back its original 63 year old name & design in 2017

WWE Universal Championship

The WWE Universal Championship is a world heavyweight championship created and promoted by the American professional wrestling promotion WWE on the SmackDown brand. It is one of WWE’s two flagship championships, alongside the WWE Championship on Raw. The current champion is Drew McIntyre, who is in his first reign.

The title was established as the WWE Championship on July 26, 2016, when then-WWE World Heavyweight Champion Dean Ambrose was drafted to SmackDown during the 2016 WWE draft. The inaugural champion was Ambrose, who won a fatal four-way match at Battleground later that same night to become the first ever Universal Champion. However, due to the higher prestige and importance placed on Raw’s world championship – as well as criticisms of SmackDown having two world titles – WWE renamed the title to its current name on August 29, 2017.

Since its inception, there have been eleven reigns shared among eight wrestlers. Brock Lesnar has been both the longest-reigning and shortest-reigning Universal Champion; he held it for 504 days (the longest reign in history), before losing it to Seth Rollins at WrestleMania 35, while also being immediately pinned by Rollins following his successful cash-in of the Money in the Bank contract earlier that same night, meaning Lesnar’s title reign lasted only seconds (the shortest reign in history). Goldberg has had two separate runs with the title; his first ended at The Great American Bash 2004 after 84 days due to Lesnar invoking his rematch clause for SummerSlam later that same evening (Goldberg won Lesnar’s Undisputed Championship in return), while his second run lasted 22 days after losing it to Lesnar again at WrestleMania XX. Finn Bálor is also recognized as a former champion; however, Bálor never officially held possession of and was never publicly acknowledged as champion by WWE outside of social media posts made before and immediately after SummerSlam in August 2018 (onlyrecognized thereafter as “the inaugural Universal Champion”), despite having won and successfully defended it numerous times prior to surrendering it due to injury shortly thereafter (a vacant version of the title was created as a result).

At 507 days, Samoa Joe’s reign is recognized as the longest in history; he defeated Roman Reigns for the vacant title at Backlash 2018 following Brock Lesnar vacating it earlier that same evening (Lesnar had won both titles at WrestleMania 34 three weeks prior). Reigns holds the record for most combined days as champion at 470 (344 days as Universal Champion and 126 as World Heavyweight Champion), while Rollins holds both individual records withruns of 133 and 140 days each (becoming first ever 2-time Universal Champion in process). As a result of the 2016 brand extension, it became exclusive to Raw and SmackDown and was renamed to reflect its exclusivity.

The title is one of WWE’s two top tag team championships, alongside the SmackDown Tag Team Championship, which was created as a result of the 2016 draft. It is contested by tag teams of two wrestlers each, with each wrestler having an equal chance in winning; theoretically, this could involve any combination of male or female wrestlers. When both titles are active at different shows or when a brand split occurs, teams may compete for both titles simultaneously; through such means as if one team holds both titles at the time or one member holding both titles individually; however this is mostly no longer done due to it becoming extremely rare.

championships have been held by 71 different teams composed of 146 different wrestlers; in addition, 11 individuals have holding the championships while not formally teamed with anyone else. Of these champions, 57 successfully defended their titles at least once (not counting vacates), while 21 held their titles for 180 days or more (also not counting vacates). The inaugural champions were Molly Holly and Spike Dudley of the inaugural champions and only co-holders were The Dudley Boyz (Bubba Ray Dudley and D-Von Dudley) who won them back-to-back on two separate occasions. The longest reigning champions are The Hardy Boyz (Jeff Hardy and Matt Hardy), who held the titles for 232 days between November 16, 2008 and April 5, 2009;Individual titleholders Kurt Angle and Edge hold the distinction of being both the fastest former Tag Team Champions to be recognized as former singles champions as well as being former multiple time World Heavyweight Champions.
