Who Are In The Baseball Playoffs?

As the MLB regular season comes to a close, we take a look at who’s in and who’s out of the baseball playoffs.

American League

The American League of Major League Baseball is one of two leagues that make up MLB. The American League consists of fourteen teams, broken into three divisions: the East, Central, and West. These divisions are made up of five teams each.

Cleveland Indians

The Cleveland Indians are an American professional baseball team based in Cleveland, Ohio. The Indians compete in Major League Baseball (MLB) as a member club of the American League (AL) Central division. Since 1994, they have played at Progressive Field. The team’s spring training facility is at Goodyear Ballpark in Goodyear, Arizona. Since their establishment as a major league franchise in 1901, the Indians have won two World Series championships: 1920 and 1948, along with 10 Central Division titles and six American League pennants.

Houston Astros

The Houston Astros are an American professional baseball team based in Houston, Texas. The Astros compete in Major League Baseball (MLB) as a member club of the American League (AL) West division, having moved to the division in 2013 after spending their first 51 seasons in the National League (NL). The Astros have played their home games at Minute Maid Park since 2000.

Boston Red Sox

The Boston Red Sox are an American professional baseball team based in Boston, Massachusetts. They compete in Major League Baseball (MLB) as a member club of the American League (AL) East division. The Red Sox are also one of two MLB clubs based in New England, the other being the Boston Braves (now the Atlanta Braves).

New York Yankees

The New York Yankees are an American professional baseball team based in the Bronx, New York City. They compete in Major League Baseball (MLB) as a member club of the American League (AL) East division. They are one of two major league clubs based in New York City, the other being the National League’s (NL) New York Mets. The Yankees began play in the 1901 season as the Baltimore Orioles (no relation to the modern Baltimore Orioles). In 1903, Frank Farrell and Bill Devery purchased the franchise after it ceased operations and moved it to New York City, renaming the club the New York Highlanders. The Highlanders were officially renamed the Yankees in 1913.

National League

The Los Angeles Dodgers clinched the National League West for the eighth consecutive season and will face the Milwaukee Brewers in the National League Division Series. The Wild Card Game will be between the NL East champion Atlanta Braves and the NL Central champion Chicago Cubs.

Los Angeles Dodgers

The Los Angeles Dodgers are an American professional baseball team based in Los Angeles, California. The Dodgers compete in Major League Baseball (MLB) as a member club of the National League (NL) West division. Established in 1883 in Brooklyn, New York, the team relocated to Los Angeles before the 1958 season. They played four seasons at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum before moving to Dodger Stadium in 1962.

The Dodgers as a franchise have won six World Series titles and 21 National League pennants. 11 NL MVP award winners have played for the Dodgers, winning a total of 13 MVP Awards, eight Cy Young Award winners have pitched for the Dodgers, winning a total of twelve Cy Young Awards. The team has also produced 18 Rookie of the Year Award winners, twice as many as the next closest team, including four consecutive from 1979 to 1982 and five consecutive from 1992 to 1996.

Washington Nationals

The Washington Nationals are an American professional baseball team based in Washington, D.C. They compete in Major League Baseball (MLB) as a member club of the National League (NL) East division. From 2005 to 2007, the team played in RFK Stadium, located about 2.5 miles south of Nationals Park. The Nationals are the eighth major league franchise to be based in Washington, D.C., and the first since 1971. They were established as the Montreal Expos in 1969, and played 22 seasons in Montreal before relocating to Washington, D.C., for the 2005 season.

The name “Nationals” refers to both the former Montreal Expos team who were instrumental in the formation of the current franchise and to Major League Baseball’s tradition of awarding a winner’s trophy to each league’s championship club (the “national” champion). The Expos franchise was founded following Canada’s Expo 67 World’s Fair; their name referred both to this event and to Montréal’s heritage as a center of world fairs.[10] As Jackie RobinsonBreaking baseball’s color barrier with Brooklyn Dodgersbreak should be capitalizedRest ofSeniors must report to drug stores for coronavirus vaccine appointmentsignificant event occurred during Expo 67, Major League Baseball held a supplemental expansion draft on October 13, 2004, designed so that one of its new franchises would inherit some players from the previous year’s 40-man roster of another franchise moving elsewhere; with this arrangement MLB hoped not only that its new franchise could be competitive immediately, but also that fan interest would carry over from that other franchise. Some have also suggested that one motivation behind baseball realigning its divisions for 1994 may have been so that any future expansion teams would have immediate rivals among teams from their own division—thus reducing travel costs and facilitating fan rivalries from day one—which proved correct when MLB added two expansion teams for 1998″, both placed into the NL Central division so as not to force too many changes with realignment (the Houston Astros moving from NL West --> Central and Milwaukee Brewers moving from AL East --> Central).

Chicago Cubs

The Chicago Cubs are an American professional baseball team based in Chicago, Illinois. The Cubs compete in Major League Baseball (MLB) as a member club of the National League (NL) Central division. The team plays its home games at Wrigley Field, located on the city’s North Side. The Cubs are one of two major league teams in Chicago; the other, the Chicago White Sox, is a member of the American League (AL) Central division.

Arizona Diamondbacks

The Arizona Diamondbacks, often shortened as the D-backs, are an American professional baseball team based in Phoenix, Arizona. The Diamondbacks compete in Major League Baseball (MLB) as a member club of the National League (NL) West division. They have played their home games at Chase Field since 1998.
