The Los Angeles Lakers are an American professional basketball team based in Los Angeles. The Lakers compete in the National Basketball Association (NBA), as a member of the league’s Western Conference Pacific Division. They play their home games at Staples Center, an arena shared with the NBA’s Los Angeles Clippers and the Los Angeles Sparks of the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA). The Lakers are one of the most successful teams in the history of the NBA, having won 17 NBA championships. As of 2020, the Lakers are ranked fourth among all-time wins in the NBA.
The franchise began with the 1947 purchase of a disbanded team, the Detroit Gems of the National Basketball League (NBL). The new team began playing in Minneapolis, calling themselves the Minneapolis Lakers in honor of Minnesota’s nickname, “Land of 10,000 Lakes”. Initially a member of the NBL, the Lakers won the 1948 NBL championship before joining the rival Basketball Association of America (BAA), where they would win five of their next six championships. In 1949, led by center George Mikan, who was signed from the Gems after they folded; they won their sixth championship. After struggling financially in early years as a small-market team, they relocated to Los Angeles before
the 1960–61 season. Led by Hall of Famers Elgin Baylor and Jerry West, Los Angeles made eight straight trips to
the NBA Finals between 1959 and 1966; however, they failed to win a title during that period despite multiple record-setting performances from Baylor and West.
In 1968, under new head coach Butch van Breda Kolff—procured from back-to-back Finals runners up New York Knicks—Los Angeles finally broke through for their seventh title against Van Breda Kolff’s former employer led by center Willis Reed and forward Walt Frazier. After losing Magic Johnson to retirement in 1991 and trading away James Worthy to save money shortly thereafter due mostly to mounting financial difficulties stemming from team owner Jerry Buss’ expensive divorce settlement at that time; winning became much harder over next several years for Lakers who would not make playoffs again until 1995 while going through head coaching changes nearly every year during that span with Del Harris being only lasting more than two seasons during that time frame; culminating when Shaquille O’Neal signed with Lake Show prior to 1996–97 season which resulted in five consecutive Finals appearances and three consecutive championships between 2000 and 2002 under head coach Phil Jackson marking return to glory days for franchise. Since then, guided by future Hall
of Famers Kobe Bryant and Pau Gasol throughout most if not all of 2000s followed by addition of fellow All Stars such as Shaquille O’Neal

The Celtics compete in the National Basketball Association (NBA) as a member of the league’s Eastern Conference Atlantic Division. Founded in 1946 as one of the league’s original eight teams, the team played their home games at Boston Arena from 1946 to 1955, followed by the Boston Garden from 1955 to 1995.
