New Orleans Saints
The New Orleans Saints are a professional American football team based in New Orleans. The Saints currently compete in the National Football League as a member club of the league’s National Football Conference South division. The team was founded by John W. Mecom Jr., David Dixon, and the city of New Orleans on November 1, 1966. The Saints began play in Tulane Stadium in 1967.
The name “Saints” is an allusion to November 1 being All Saints Day in the Catholic faith, as it was founded on that date. They have played their home games at Mercedes-Benz Superdome since 1975, when they moved from Tulane Stadium after twelve seasons. The Superdome gained international attention of a different type in 2005 when it housed thousands of people seeking shelter from Hurricane Katrina.
The team was established as an expansion team and first took the field for the 1967 season. In September of that year, they signed someone who would become a cornerstone of the franchise for years to come: quarterback Archie Manning out of Ole Miss.
