Contents
We’re down to the final four teams in the NFL playoffs, and it’s anyone’s guess who will come out on top. Who are your picks to make it to the big game?
The teams
The four teams that remain in the NFL playoffs are the Los Angeles Rams, the New Orleans Saints, the New England Patriots, and the Kansas City Chiefs. These are the top seeds in each conference, and they have all played well to get to this point. Let’s take a look at each team.
The Rams
The Rams are a professional American football team that compete in the National Football League (NFL). They are based in Los Angeles, California, and are members of the league’s NFC West division. The Rams franchise was founded in 1936 as the Cleveland Rams in the short-lived second American Football League before joining the NFL the next year. In 1946, the franchise moved to Los Angeles. The Rams franchise remained in the metro area until 1994, when they moved to Anaheim Stadium in Orange County. The team appeared in Super Bowl XIV following the 1979 season.
The Saints
The New Orleans Saints are a professional American football team based in New Orleans, Louisiana. The Saints currently compete in the National Football League (NFL) as a member of the league’s National Football Conference (NFC) South division. The team was founded by John W. Mecom Jr., David Dixon, and the city of New Orleans on November 1, 1966. The Saints began play in Tulane Stadium in 1967.
The name “Saints” is an allusion to November 1 being All Saints Day in the Catholic faith, or more specifically, to the birthday of the Roman Catholic patron saint of New Orleans, St. Louis IX. Since 1967, they have played their home games at Mercedes-Benz Superdome after using Tulane Stadium during its first season. They are also the first NFL franchise to agree to purchase an entire city block for their stadium area and training facility.
The Patriots
The New England Patriots are a professional American football team based in the Greater Boston area. The Patriots compete in the National Football League (NFL) as a member club of the league’s American Football Conference (AFC) East division. The team plays its home games at Gillette Stadium in the town of Foxborough, Massachusetts, which is located 28 miles (45 km) southwest of downtown Boston.
The Patriots are also headquartered at Gillette Stadium. An original member of the American Football League (AFL), the Patriots joined the NFL in the 1970 merger of the two leagues. The team changed its name from the original Boston Patriots after relocating to Foxborough in 1971. The Patriots played their home games at Foxboro Stadium from 1971 to 2001, then moved to Gillette Stadium at the start of the 2002 season. By winning Super Bowl LIII on February 3, 2019, they improved their record to six wins in nine appearances in that game, tied with Pittsburgh for most wins and appearances by any franchise). They have appeared in ten Super Bowls overall and won seven – tied with Pittsburgh for most wins by any NFL franchise) .
The Patriots have had 27 head coaches (including acting head coaches) since their founding; nineteen of them have led the team to postseason berths, nineteen have led them to AFC Championship appearances, and eleven have taken them to Super Bowls: three won all three post-season events (Miller, Johnson, and Belichick), while another three won both conference championships and a Super Bowl appearance but lost (Mora, Carroll, and O’Brien). Three head coaches – Hank Bullough , Rod Rust , and Bill Parcells – each served two non-consecutive tenures as Patriots head coach. Pioli and Saban each served one day as acting head coach; Pioli was New England’s de facto head coach for one game between Carroll’s firing and Belichick’s hiring while Saban coached New England’s defense for one game between Parcells’s resignation and Pete Carroll’s hiring .
The Chiefs
The 2019 Kansas City Chiefs season is the franchise’s 50th season in the National Football League, their 60th overall and their first under head coach Andy Reid. The Chiefs improved upon their 12–4 record from 2018 and secured the AFC’s No. 1 seed for a second consecutive year with a 12-4 record. They defeated the Houston Texans 51–31 in the AFC Divisional Playoffs and advanced to their first AFC Championship Game since 1993, where they defeated the Tennessee Titans 35-24 to earn their first trip to the Super Bowl since 1970.
The players
In the NFL, the final four are the four teams that make it to the Conference Championships, which is the penultimate round of the playoffs. These teams are the two best teams from each conference, and they compete against each other in order to make it to the Super Bowl.
Tom Brady
Tom Brady is an American football quarterback for the New England Patriots of the National Football League (NFL). He is one of only two players to win five Super Bowls (the other being defensive end Charles Haley), and he is the only player to win them all playing for one team. He has also won four NFL MVP awards, more than any other player in history. Brady was drafted by the Patriots in the sixth round of the 2000 NFL Draft, and he has played his entire professional career with New England.
Drew Brees
Drew Brees is the current quarterback for the New Orleans Saints. He is a former Super Bowl MVP and is widely considered to be one of the best quarterbacks of his generation. He has led the Saints to 10 divisional titles and has been selected to 12 Pro Bowls.
Jared Goff
Jared Goff was the first overall pick of the 2016 NFL draft by the Los Angeles Rams. He played college football at California, where he was a two-time First-team All-Pac-12 quarterback. Goff was considered one of the best QB prospects for the 2016 NFL draft, and was ranked as the second best QB by most analysts. He completed his rookie season with 4,057 passing yards, 55.4% completions, and 5 TDs.
Patrick Mahomes
During the regular season, Patrick Mahomes completed 436 of 677 passes for 4,781 yards, 38 touchdowns, and just six interceptions. He also ran for 273 yards and one score. All of that earned him the NFL’s MVP award for the 2018 season.
The coaches
The four NFL teams that have made it to the conference championship games this weekend are led by coaches with very different career trajectories. The Rams’ Sean McVay was a wunderkind offensive coordinator who was elevated to head coach at age 30. The Patriots’ Bill Belichick is a defensive-minded mastermind who’s been with New England for 18 years. The Saints’ Sean Payton is an offensive innovator. And the Chiefs’ Andy Reid is an offensive technician who’s been a head coach for 21 years.
Sean McVay
Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay has been with the team since 2017. In his first year as head coach, he took the Rams to the playoffs for the first time since 2004. The Rams lost in the Wild Card round to the Atlanta Falcons.
In 2018, the Rams had a 13-3 regular season record and won the NFC West division title. They also won a playoff game against the Dallas Cowboys before losing to the New England Patriots in the Super Bowl.
McVay is known for his offensive coaching ability. He has helped quarterback Jared Goff develop into one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL.
Bill Belichick
Bill Belichick is an American football coach who is the head coach of the New England Patriots of the National Football League (NFL). Belichick has been with the Patriots since 2000, and his current tenure is the longest of any head coach with any team in NFL history.
Belichick began his coaching career in 1975 and became defensive coordinator for the New York Giants in 1985. He later rejoined Parcells, first in New England as assistant head coach and receivers coach from 1991 to 1992, and then with the Jets from 1997 to 1999. Belichick became head coach of the Jets after Parcells retired following the 1999 season, but was fired after one day on the job.
He joined the Patriots again as assistant head coach and linebackers coach in 2000, before being named head coach after Pete Carroll was fired following the team’s fifth consecutive loss. Since then, Belichick has led the Patriots to seventeen division titles, eleven AFC Championships—including nine consecutive appearances from 2011 to 2019—and six Super Bowl victories—XXXVI, XXXVIII, XXXIX, XLIX, LI, and LIII; earning him Super Bowl wins as both a head and assistant coach.
Andy Reid
Andy Reid (born March 19, 1958) is an American football coach who is the current head coach of the Kansas City Chiefs of the National Football League (NFL). Reid was previously the head coach of the Philadelphia Eagles from 1999 to 2012. From 2001 to 2012, he was also the Eagles’ executive vice president of football operations, effectively making him the team’s general manager. He played college football at Brigham Young University.
The match-ups
This year’s NFL final four will be the New England Patriots, the Los Angeles Rams, the New Orleans Saints, and the Kansas City Chiefs. These four teams have been the best in the league all year and have earned their spot in the playoffs. Let’s take a look at the match-ups.
Rams vs. Saints
The Los Angeles Rams and New Orleans Saints are set to square off in the NFC Championship game this Sunday, January 20. The Rams are coming off a victory over the Dallas Cowboys in the divisional round, while the Saints defeated the Philadelphia Eagles.
This will be the second meeting between these two teams this season, with the Rams winning the first contest 45-35 back in November. The Rams come into this game as 3.5-point favorites, but with both teams boasting high-powered offenses, it is expected to be a close game.
Whoever emerges victorious from this contest will face either the New England Patriots or Kansas City Chiefs in the Super Bowl.
Patriots vs. Chiefs
This game is a rematch of last season’s AFC Championship Game, which the Patriots won in overtime. The Patriots are looking to return to the Super Bowl for the third straight year, and they will have their hands full with a Chiefs team that is loaded with offensive firepower. The key for the Patriots will be to contain Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, who is one of the most dynamic young players in the league.
The Chiefs, meanwhile, will be looking to take advantage of an aging Patriots defense that has shown some vulnerability this season. If the Chiefs can get their high-powered offense clicking, they could be headed to their first Super Bowl appearance in 50 years.
