Who Are The Original Six In The NHL?
Contents
The Original Six is the group of six teams that made up the National Hockey League (NHL) for the 1941-42 season.
The Original Six
The term “Original Six” is used in the National Hockey League (NHL) to refer to the original six teams that made up the league: Boston Bruins, Chicago Blackhawks, Detroit Red Wings, Montreal Canadiens, New York Rangers and Toronto Maple Leafs. These six teams were the only ones in the NHL from 1942 until 1967, when the league doubled in size with the addition of six expansion teams.
Despite their long history and tradition, the Original Six teams have not been as successful as other teams in recent years. In fact, since 1967, only four of them have won the Stanley Cup: the Montreal Canadiens (10 times), the Toronto Maple Leafs (once), the Boston Bruins (once) and the Chicago Blackhawks (once).
The Boston Bruins
The Boston Bruins are a professional ice hockey team based in Boston, Massachusetts. They are members of the Atlantic Division of the Eastern Conference of the National Hockey League (NHL). The team has been in existence since 1924, making them the third-oldest active team in the NHL, and the oldest to be based in the United States.
The Bruins began play in 1924 as an expansion team, joining six other teams that made up the NHL’s first wave of expansion. These six teams – the Bruins, Chicago Blackhawks, Detroit Red Wings, Montreal Canadiens, New York Rangers, and original Toronto Maple Leafs – would come to be known as the “Original Six.” The Bruins have won six Stanley Cup championships, tied for fourth most of any NHL team and tied for second-most among active NHL teams.
The Chicago Blackhawks
The Chicago Blackhawks are one of the original six teams in the NHL. They were founded in 1926 and have won six Stanley Cups, including three in the last six years. The Blackhawks are a strong team with a passionate fan base, and they show no signs of slowing down anytime soon.
The Detroit Red Wings
The Red Wings, based in Detroit, Michigan, are a professional ice hockey team that compete in the National Hockey League (NHL). One of the original six teams of the NHL, the Red Wings were founded in 1926. The team has won 11 Stanley Cup championships, the most of any NHL team based in the United States.
The Montreal Canadiens
The Montreal Canadiens are one of the most storied franchises in NHL history. They are one of the “Original Six” teams that made up the league when it was founded in 1917, and they have won more Stanley Cups than any other team in the league. The Canadiens play their home games at the Bell Centre in Montreal, Quebec.
The New York Rangers
The New York Rangers are a professional ice hockey team based in New York City. They are members of the Metropolitan Division of the Eastern Conference of the National Hockey League (NHL). The team plays its home games at Madison Square Garden in the borough of Manhattan, an arena they share with the New York Knicks of the National Basketball Association (NBA). They are one of three NHL teams located in the New York metropolitan area; the others being the New Jersey Devils and New York Islanders.
The Rangers were founded in 1926 as an expansion franchise and were one of the original six teams that competed in the NHL until 1942, when the league temporarily ceased operations due to World War II. The team is part of an Original Six rivalry with the Boston Bruins, to which both teams claim to have been established before 1926.
The Toronto Maple Leafs
The Original Six is the group of six teams that made up the National Hockey League (NHL) for the 25 seasons between 1942 and 1967. They are the Boston Bruins, Chicago Blackhawks, Detroit Red Wings, Montreal Canadiens, New York Rangers and Toronto Maple Leafs. These teams were already big rivals before the NHL formed.
