Elvin Ernest Hayes, nicknamed “The Big E”, is an American retired professional basketball player who played for the Houston Mavericks and Baltimore/Washington Bullets. He is a member of the NBA’s 50th Anniversary All-Time Team, and an inductee into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.

Hayes was born to sharecroppers in Rayville in Winn Parish, Louisiana. He was one of eight children. As a high school senior in Rayville, he led his team to the state semifinals. Although recruited by several colleges to play basketball, he chose to play at the University of Houston because it did not have an race policy at that time. He joined a freshman team that included future Hall of Famer Clyde Drexler. When their head coach had suffered there were two assistant coaches who took over which were John Eubanks and Guy V. Lewis again former head coach of the men’s basketball team. Together they led the Cougars to a 27–2 record overall 11–0 in Southwestern Conference play winning the conference title for the first time ever in school history., advancing to the Final Four for the first time as well. They finished third overall defeating 1960 Olympic gold medalists and defending NCAA champions Ohio State 82–81 in double overtime; Hayes scored 39 points and had 15 rebounds in this game which became known as “The Game of The Century”.
