Novak Djokovic

Novak Djokovic is a Serbian professional tennis player who is currently ranked world No. 1 in men’s singles tennis by the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP). He has won 17 Grand Slam singles titles, the fourth most in history, and 77 ATP Tour titles, the second most in history.

Early Life

Novak Djokovic was born on May 22, 1987, in Belgrade, Yugoslavia (now Serbia). The only son of Srđan and Dijana Djokovic, he has two older Sisters named Marko and Ivanka. His father owned a pizza parlor while his mother was a lawyer. When he was four years old, he started playing tennis with the help of his father.

Djokovic showed great potential early on and was admitted to the Tennis Academy of Niki Pilic in Munich when he was just 12 years old. He later enrolled at the Pilgrim School in Banja Luka, Bosnia and Herzegovina. A few years later, Djokovic moved to the prestigious tennis academy in Engelholm, Sweden to continue his training. In 2003, at the age of 16, he turned professional.

Professional Career

Djokovic turned professional in 2003 and joined the ATP Tour in 2005. He made his Grand Slam debut at the 2006 Australian Open, reaching the third round before losing to Fabrice Santoro. In 2007, Djokovic reached his first Grand Slam singles final at the 2007 U.S. Open, where he lost to Roger Federer in straight sets. In 2008, Djokovic reached the semifinals of both the French Open and Wimbledon, losing to eventual champions Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer respectively. In 2009, he won his first Grand Slam singles title at the 2009 Australian Open after defeating Federer in a five-set final that lasted almost five hours. Rafael Nadal is a Spanish tennis player who is currently ranked number one in the world by the Association of Tennis Professionals. He has won nineteen Grand Slam singles titles, the most of any male player in history. Nadal has also won four Olympic gold medals, which is more than any other tennis player in history.

Early Life

Rafael Nadal was born on June 3, 1986, in Mallorca, Spain. He is the son of Sebastián Nadal, a businessman who owns an insurance company, and Ana María Parera, a housewife. Nadal’s paternal grandfather, Miguel Ángel Nadal, was a professional footballer for RCD Mallorca. Rafael has two sisters: María Isabel (“Mariana”) and Ana María (“Toni”). At the age of four he began playing tennis at his home club Club de Tenis Reial de Pedralbes with his uncle Toni Nadal. In 2001 he defeated Roy Emerson in the final of the Boys’ Singles tournament at Wimbledon.

Professional Career

In 2005, Nadal became the youngest man to finish the year ranked in the Top 10 by the ATP. His biggest win that year came in September at the age of 18, when he defeated world No. 2 and four-time defending champion Roger Federer in the final of the Rogers Cup hard court tournament in Toronto. This was Nadal’s first ever win over Federer, who had been undefeated on hard courts up to that point. Later that month, Nadal helped Spain win the Davis Cup for the first time in 19 years. He won both his singles matches in Spain’s 3-2 victory over Argentina in the final, played on clay courts in Seville.

Roger Federer was born on August 8, 1981, in Basel, Switzerland. He began playing tennis at age eight, and turned professional in 1998 at the age of 17. That same year, he won his first ATP tourney at the Marseille Open.

Federer quickly established himself as one of the top tennis players in the world. He reached the Wimbledon finals in 2002 and 2003, losing both times to Australia’s Lleyton Hewitt. Serena Jameka Williams was born on September 26, 1981, in Saginaw, Michigan, to Richard Williams and Oracene Price.
