Their History

The Ravens compete in the National Football League (NFL) as a member club of the American Football Conference (AFC) North division. The team plays its home games at M&T Bank Stadium and is headquartered in Owings Mills.
The Ravens were established in 1996, when Art Modell, who was then the owner of the Cleveland Browns, announced plans to relocate the franchise to Baltimore in response to a Cairo-based company’s attempt to build a stadium on the city’s East Side that would have forced the Browns out of Cleveland Stadium. As part of a settlement between Modell, the league, and then-Maryland Governor Parris Glendening, Modell was allowed to moving the team provided that he sold all but five percent stake in the team to new owners, and that he find a suitable replacement for Cleveland Stadium. The resulting agreement ledthen-owner of Memorial Stadium Jack Kent Cooke to move the Los Angeles Rams to Anaheim Stadium in nearby Orange County for what would be their final season there before returning to Los Angeles for good (where they are now known as Inglewood).
It took until looked like it wouldn’t be built until after Cooke’s death for construction on Camden Yards sports complex began in earnest; by then Modell had reached an agreement with former Memphis Grizzlies owner Peter Angelos and sold him majority interest in team on April 9, 1996. Angelos then hired Ozzie Newsome as general manager and Ted Marchibroda as head coach. The team played its first game at Memorial Stadium on September 1st against the Pittsburgh Steelers, which they won 16-7; Pittsburgh would return the favor five weeks later when they beat Baltimore 27-10 at Three Rivers Stadium on their way to winning Super Bowl XXX.
In 1999, following a controversial relocation proposal by owner Jerry Jones that would have seen them become tenants in Arlington’s new Cowboys Stadium (now AT&T Stadium), NFL owners voted unanimously to approve Baltimore’s application for expansionastic years ago when young quarterbacks roamed wild and free,” wrote Peter King
