Who Are The Underdogs In The NFL?
Contents
Who are the underdogs in the NFL this season? We take a look at the teams that could surprise us and make a run at the playoffs.
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are an NFL team who have been underdogs for most of their history. They only have one Super Bowl win, which was in 2002, and they haven’t made it to the playoffs since 2007. Despite all of this, they continue to fight and try to get better every year.
Their History
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers began play in 1976 as an expansion team of the National Football League (NFL). They are currently members of the NFC South division. The Buccaneers struggled for over a decade, posting losing records in all but two of their first thirteen seasons. Since 1982, however, the team has mostly been competitive, posting seventeen winning seasons and qualified for the playoffs eleven times. They have won six division titles (1999, 2002, 2005, 2007, 2010, and 2020), one conference championship (2002), and Super Bowl titles in 2002 and 2020.
Their Recent Struggles
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are a professional American football team based in Tampa, Florida. The Buccaneers compete in the National Football League (NFL) as a member club of the league’s National Football Conference (NFC) South division. The club joined the NFL in 1976 as an expansion team, along with the Seattle Seahawks. The Bucs played their first season in the American Football Conference (AFC) West division as part of an NFL realignment plan that placed every NFC team except for the Dallas Cowboys in the NFC East. Within a year, they were moved to the NFC Central, where they spent the next 15 seasons.
Since 2002, the Buccaneers have played their home games at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa. They are one of three NFL teams to reside in state within Florida, the others being the Jacksonville Jaguars and Miami Dolphins. Along with Detroit and Washington D.C., Tampa is one of three cities where an NFL team shares its city with an MLB team; since 2008, these have been intra-city rivals Tampa Bay Rays and Bucs. The team is currently valued at $1.8 billion, making them 7th most valuable sports franchise in America, and highest in their home state of Florida.
Their Potential
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are one of the most potential-filled teams in the NFL. They have a young, talented roster that is brimming with potential. They also have one of the best coaches in the league in Bruce Arians.
The Bucs have a chance to be special this season. They have the ability to make a deep run in the playoffs and possibly even win a Super Bowl.
The key for the Bucs is to stay healthy and to continue to develop as a team. If they can do those things, they will be a force to be reckoned with in the NFL.
The Cleveland Browns
The Cleveland Browns are a professional American football team based in Cleveland, Ohio. The Browns compete in the National Football League as a member club of the American Football Conference North division. The Browns play their home games at FirstEnergy Stadium, which opened in 1999, with administrative offices and training facilities in Berea, Ohio. The Browns’ official colors are brown, orange, and white. They are unique among the 32 member franchises of the NFL in that they do not have a logo on their helmets.
Their History
The Cleveland Browns are a professional American football team based in Cleveland, Ohio. The Browns compete in the National Football League (NFL) as a member club of the American Football Conference (AFC) North division. The Browns franchise was founded in 1944 by businessman Arthur B. McBride and coach Paul Brown as a charter member of the All-America Football Conference (AAFC). The Browns dominated the AAFC, compiling a 47–4–3 record in the league’s four seasons and winning its franchise championship in each of them. When the AAFC folded after the 1949 season, the Browns joined the NFL along with three other AAFC teams, the San Francisco 49ers, the original Baltimore Colts, and the original Buffalo Bills. In 1950, Cleveland was awarded an NFL franchise.
The Browns began play in 1946 in the AAFC. Under Paul Brown, who was their coach for their first eight seasons and general manager for their first 11 seasons, they won four AAFC championships – in 1946, 1947, 1948, and 1949 – before being amalgamated into the NFL when that league began play in 1950 following a merger with its chief rival to that time, the National Football League. Their first training camp was held at Bowling Green State University. They played their home games at Municipal Stadium until 1971; from 1953 to 1995 at Cleveland Stadium; and from 1996 to present at FirstEnergy Stadium
Their Recent Struggles
It has been awhile since the Cleveland Browns were a relevant team in the NFL. Since their return to the league in 1999, they have only made the playoffs once, which was in 2002. They have had 21 different starting quarterbacks and only two of those QBs have had winning records with the team. In fact, the Browns have only had four winning seasons in their 21 years back in the league. Needless to say, they have been the laughing stock of the NFL for quite some time now.
However, there seems to be some hope for the Browns as they have made some good moves this off-season. They got a new Head Coach in Freddie Kitchens and they acquired one of the best wide receivers in Odell Beckham Jr. from the Giants. With those two additions, along with some other young talent on their roster, many people are thinking that the Browns could finally be turning things around and could be a relevant team again in 2019. Time will tell if they can actually turn things around or if they will continue to be one of the worst teams in the NFL.
Their Potential
The Cleveland Browns may be the underdogs in the NFL, but they have a lot of potential. They have a young, talented team and a passionate fan base. If they can put it all together, they could be a force to be reckoned with in the league.
The San Francisco 49ers
The San Francisco 49ers are a team that has had a lot of success in the past, but they are definitely an underdog this year. They have a new head coach, and they are coming off of a disappointing season. They are also in a difficult division, and they have a lot of questions to answer. Can they turn things around and make a run at the playoffs? We will have to wait and see.
Their History
The San Francisco 49ers are a professional American football team located in the San Francisco Bay Area. They compete in the National Football League (NFL) as a member of the league’s National Football Conference (NFC) West division. The 49ers joined the NFL in 1946 as a member of the All-America Football Conference (AAFC) and won four AAFC championships before joining the NFL in 1950. The team had success early on, winning five of its first six NFL Championship appearances detailed below.
The 49ers have been to five Super Bowls, winning each one, tied with the Dallas Cowboys and New England Patriots for second most Super Bowl wins by any one team. They are also tied with the Pittsburgh Steelers for most conference championships with six apiece. With 18 divisional championships, the 49ers havereplyed more often than any other franchise since 1970; they have played in 30 title games, more than any other team in that period. Throughout their history, the 49ers have employed some of the game’s greatest coaches such as Bill Walsh and George Seifert, and have had many players elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame, notably Joe Montana, Jerry Rice, Ronnie Lott, Steve Young, and Walter Payton.
Their Recent Struggles
The San Francisco 49ers are a professional American football team based in the San Francisco Bay Area. They compete in the National Football League (NFL) as a member of the league’s National Football Conference (NFC) West division. The 49ers were founded in 1946 as a charter member of the All-America Football Conference (AAFC) and joined the NFL in 1949 when the leagues merged. The team plays its home games at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California, located 38 miles (61 kilometers) southeast of San Francisco in the heart of Silicon Valley. Since 1988, the 49ers have been headquartered in Santa Clara.
The team was founded in 1946 as a charter member of the All-America Football Conference and joined the NFL in 1949 when the leagues merged. The 49ers have been to five Super Bowls, winning two of them. They have had 16 head coaches, two of which – George Seifert and Bill Walsh – are members of the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Especially during Seifert’s tenure as head coach from 1989 to 1996, they captured 8 divisional championships and won 5 Super Bowls – more than any other team has accomplished during that time frame. In total, San Francisco has won 19 conference championships, tied with Dallas for second most among NFL teams (behind Green Bay’s 23).
The 49ers have had moderate success since 2000 but haven’t made it back to the Super Bowl since 1994. In recent years, they’ve struggled with inconsistency and poor coaching. Several key players from their most recent successful teams have retired or left for other teams, leaving them without much star power. As a result, they’ve been an underdog in many games over the past few years.
