Doug Flutie’s NFL Career

Doug Flutie played for four NFL teams during his professional career. He began his career with the Los Angeles Rams in 1986, but was released before the season began. He then signed with the Chicago Bears and played there for two seasons. He was then traded to the New England Patriots, where he played for six seasons. Lastly, he ended his career with the San Diego Chargers, playing there for two seasons before retiring.

New England Patriots

Doug Flutie played for the New England Patriots from 1987-1989. He was part of the team that won Super Bowl XX in 1986.

Buffalo Bills

Doug Flutie played for the Buffalo Bills from 1998-2000. He is most famously remembered for his “Hail Mary” touchdown pass to beat the Miami Dolphins in 1998.

San Diego Chargers

From 1998 to 2000, Doug Flutie was the San Diego Chargers’ starting quarterback. He helped lead the team to back-to-back playoff appearances in his first two years with the club. In 1999, he was named the NFL’s Comeback Player of the Year after completing 56 percent of his passes for 3,464 yards and 29 touchdowns. He also ran for another 372 yards and six touchdowns that season.

After the NFL

Doug Flutie played for various NFL teams throughout his career. After he retired from the NFL, he became a college football analyst.

CFL

Doug Flutie played for the CFL from 1990-1997 for the BC Lions, Calgary Stampeders, and Toronto Argonauts. After his career in the CFL, he then went on to play for two teams in the NFL for a total of 8 years. He played first for the Buffalo Bills from 1998-2000 and then for the San Diego Chargers from 2001-2005.

Arena Football

Doug Flutie played for the New Jersey Generals of the United States Football League (USFL) in 1985. He then spent four seasons (1986–1989) with the Chicago Bears of the National Football League (NFL). He returned to the USFL to play for the Los Angeles Express in 1990 and 1991. In between his stints in the USFL and NFL, Flutie played for the British Columbia Lions of the Canadian Football League (CFL) in 1990. He played his final season in 2005 with the New England Patriots, his only year with that team.

USFL

Doug Flutie played for the USFL’s New Jersey Generals in 1985. The Generals were owned by Donald Trump, and were one of the league’s most popular teams. Trump hired former New York Jets head coach Walt Michaels to coached the team, and they also had former Jets star running back Matt Snell on their roster. The USFL folded after just three seasons, but Doug Flutie was one of the league’s best players, and was named its Most Valuable Player in 1985.
