Jim Harbaugh’s NFL Coaching Career
Jim Harbaugh has been the head coach of three NFL teams: the San Francisco 49ers, the Chicago Bears, and the Indianapolis Colts. He has also been an assistant coach for the Oakland Raiders and the Philadelphia Eagles.
San Francisco 49ers (2011-2014)
In 2011, Harbaugh was hired by the San Francisco 49ers. In his first season as an NFL head coach, Harbaugh took the 49ers to a 13-3 record and an appearance in the NFC Championship Game. The following year, the 49ers made it to the Super Bowl, but lost to the Baltimore Ravens. In 2013, the 49ers made it back to the NFC Championship Game, but lost to the Seattle Seahawks. Harbaugh’s final year with the 49ers was in 2014, when they finished 8-8 and missed the playoffs.
Michigan Wolverines (2015-present)
In December 2014, Harbaugh was hired as head coach of his alma mater, the University of Michigan, signing a seven-year contract worth $5 million annually. He notably turned down an offer from the NFL’s Cleveland Browns that would have paid him over $8 million per year.
On December 30, 2014, in his first game back at Ann Arbor, Harbaugh led Michigan to a 41–7 rout of Florida in the 2015 Citrus Bowl. The game was described as “an utter demolition” of the Gators, who were considered one of the best teams in the nation coming into the contest. On September 3, 2016, in his first game as a head coach against arch-rival Ohio State, Harbaugh and Michigan were defeated 0–42 in Columbus. It was the worst loss for Michigan in the series history.
Harbaugh’s Other Coaching Stints
Harbaugh has had several other coaching stints in the NFL prior to becoming the 49ers head coach. He was the quarterbacks coach for the Oakland Raiders in 2002, and the quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator for the Philadelphia Eagles from 2004-2007. Harbaugh was also the head coach of the Stanford Cardinal football team from 2007-2010.
Stanford Cardinal (2007-2010)
Harbaugh’s first head coaching job was at Stanford University, where he was hired on December 19, 2006. In four seasons at Stanford, Harbaugh compiled a 29–21 record. Though he failed to produce a winning season in his first year, Harbaugh’s Cardinal team improved its record to 8–5 in 2008 and posted consecutive winning seasons in 2009 and 2010, finishing with a 12–1 record and a ranking of #4 in the AP poll after winning the Orange Bowl. Harbaugh’s success at Stanford led to him being mentioned as a potential head coaching candidate for several NFL teams.
University of San Diego (2004-2006)
Harbaugh’s first head coaching job was with the University of San Diego in 2004. In his three seasons at San Diego, Harbaugh compiled a record of 29-6 (.829), won two Pioneer Football League championships (2004, 2005), and coached the Toreros to the school’s first-ever appearance in the Football Championship Subdivision playoffs in 2005. Harbaugh’s teams at USD were known for their aggressive style of play on both offense and defense, as well as their special teams play.
Why Harbaugh Hasn’t Returned to the NFL
There are a few reasons why Harbaugh hasn’t returned to the NFL. The first reason is that he’s happy with coaching at the University of Michigan. The second reason is that NFL teams are not interested in him because of his poor performance during his time with the San Francisco 49ers.
His Success at Michigan
During his time at Michigan, Harbaugh has managed to turn the Wolverines into a force to be reckoned with again. After years of struggling, the team is now a regular contender in the Big Ten and has even made it to the playoffs a few times. Simply put, Harbaugh has been very successful at Michigan and it’s no wonder that he hasn’t been tempted to return to the NFL.
His Desires to Win a National Championship
Harbaugh has stated that his desire to win a national championship is the main reason he has not returned to the NFL. He believes that he can have more success at the collegiate level, where there are more opportunities to compete for a title.
His Controversial Personality
Harbaugh’s controversial personality is well documented. He’s been described as difficult to work with, arrogant, and abrasive. These traits may have served him well in college, but they wouldn’t fly in the NFL. In the pros, coaches are expected to be more collaborative and compromising. Harbaugh’s my-way-or-the-highway attitude would likely alienate NFL players and front office personnel.
