Who Got Cut in the NFL Today?

Keep up with all the latest NFL news, including who got cut from each team today.

NFL Rosters

As the NFL season quickly approaches, teams are scrambling to figure out their final 53 man rosters. Many players are fighting for their jobs, and some will inevitably be cut. Here are some of the notable cuts from around the NFL today.

Active Rosters

As of September 1st, each NFL team is required to reduce their roster size from 90 players to 53. These cuts mark the end of preseason and the beginning of the regular season.

After the final roster cuts have been made, each team’s 53-man active roster is bolstered by a 10-man practice squad. NFL teams are allowed to sign unlimited free agents that have been cut by other teams throughout the season. These players can be signed to the active roster at any time, but they must first clear waivers.

Injured Reserve

In the National Football League (NFL), the injured reserve list (IR list) is a designation used for certain players who are injured and are deactivated for a minimum of eight weeks of play. Up to three players can be placed on IR during the preseason, while teams can place an unlimited number of players on IR during the regular season. Players placed on IR do not count against the team’s 53-man roster limit.

Practice Squad

Players on the practice squad are paid per week and can be cut at any time by their team. They are also free to sign with any other team in the league. Practice squad players are not eligible to play in games.

In order to be eligible for the practice squad, a player must not have been on an active NFL roster for more than nine games in any one season, and they must have less than one year of NFL experience.

Traded Picks

In the NFL, trading picks is a way for teams to acquire the players they want without having to go through the draft process. Teams will often trade picks for players that they feel will be an immediate impact on their roster. Here are some of the most recent trades involving NFL draft picks:

The New England Patriots traded their first-round pick (32nd overall) to the Carolina Panthers for wide receiver Torry Holt.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers traded their first-round pick (19th overall) and a fourth-round pick to the New York Jets for safety Lito Sheppard.

The Washington Redskins traded their first-round pick (13th overall) to the New Orleans Saints for defensive end Charles Grant.

Free Agents

In the NFL, rosters are constantly changing as teams make moves to stay under the league’s salary cap. As a result, there are always a lot of free agents available. Some free agents are veterans who have been released by their teams, while others are young players who were not drafted. Today, we’ll take a look at some of the free agents who were cut by their teams.

Unrestricted Free Agents

Unrestricted free agents (UFA) are free to sign with any team. They do not need to wait for any period of time and can sign with a new team as soon as their old contract expires. Players who have been in the league for four or more years are unrestricted free agents.

Players who are released by their team are also considered unrestricted free agents. They are free to sign with any other team, but may not be contacted or signed by their former team for a period of two weeks.

Restricted Free Agents

A restricted free agent is an unsigned player who has three accrued seasons of service and an expired contract. When their contract expires, they are free to sign with any team, but their original team has the right to match the offer and retain them. If the original team opts not to match, they may be eligible for draft pick compensation depending on the size of the offer sheet.
