Players Who Got Cut
Every year, NFL teams make the tough decision to cut players from their roster. This can be for a variety of reasons, including salary cap concerns, poor performance, or a change in the team’s offensive or defensive scheme. Let’s take a look at some of the notable players who got cut today.
Cleveland Browns
The Cleveland Browns cut 14 players on Friday, including veteran linebacker Jamie Collins Sr. and running back Dontrell Hilliard.
Collins, 30, was in his second season with the Browns after being acquired in a trade with the New England Patriots in 2016. He started all 16 games for the Browns last season and had 73 tackles.
Hilliard, 24, was a seventh-round pick of the Browns in 2018 and appeared in four games as a rookie, rushing for 41 yards on 11 carries.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers
-The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have cut wide receiver Justin Watson and linebacker Emmanuel Lamur, the team announced Tuesday.
-Watson, a 2018 fifth-round pick, had nine catches for 66 yards in four games last season.
-Lamur, who was signed by the Buccaneers in August, had one tackle in two games this season.
New England Patriots
The New England Patriots have released veteran linebacker Rosevelt Colvin, saving themselves $3.85 million in salary cap space.
The move was widely expected, as Colvin had been a vocal critic of the team’s decision to release safety Rodney Harrison earlier in the offseason. Harrison was one of the team’s emotional leaders, and Colvin was one of the few remaining links to the Patriots’ Super Bowl teams of 2001 and 2003.
Colvin, who will turn 32 in October, was due to make $5 million in base salary this season. He was originally signed by the Patriots as a free agent in 2003, and he helped them win two Super Bowls during his four seasons with the team.
In 2007, Colvin had 67 tackles and four sacks in 16 games. He missed the final four games of the regular season and all three of the Patriots’ playoff games after suffering a hip injury.
