Who Got Fired?
The NFL has a long history of firing coaches, and today is no different. Who got fired today? Here are the latest NFL coaching casualty list.
Cleveland Browns
The Cleveland Browns have fired head coach Hue Jackson, the team announced on Monday. Jackson was in his third season with the Browns, and he finishes his tenure in Cleveland with a 3-36-1 record. He is the only coach in NFL history to compile a 1-31 record over two seasons.
The Browns also fired offensive coordinator Todd Haley, the team announced. Haley, who was in his first season with the Browns, will be replaced by running backs coach Freddie Kitchens on an interim basis.
The Browns made the announcement just hours after they lost to the Pittsburgh Steelers, 33-18, on Sunday. Cleveland has now dropped 27 straight games to AFC North opponents dating back to 2015.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have fired their head coach, Dirk Koetter. The team made the announcement on Sunday, December 30, 2018. The Buccaneers finished the 2018 season with a record of 5-11.
Koetter was in his third season as the head coach of the Buccaneers. He was hired in 2016, after the team fired Lovie Smith. Smith had led the Buccaneers to a record of 8-24 in his two seasons as head coach.
Under Koetter, the Buccaneers failed to make the playoffs. They finished with a record of 9-7 in 2016 and 2017. In 2018, they slumped to 5-11.
Koetter’s firing comes as no surprise. Rumors have been swirling for weeks that he would be fired if the team failed to make the playoffs.
San Francisco 49ers
The San Francisco 49ers have fired head coach Chip Kelly, the team announced on Sunday night.
“I have great respect for Chip as a coach and as a person,” 49ers general manager Trent Baalke said in a statement. “The decision to part ways was not an easy one, but it is in the best interest of the organization. I wish Chip and his wife, Jill, all the best.”
Kelly was hired by the 49ers in 2016 after being fired by the Eagles following the 2015 season. He went 2-14 in his only season with San Francisco.
Why Did They Get Fired?
In the NFL, head coaches are usually the first ones to go when a team is struggling. That’s because they’re the ones who are responsible for putting together a winning game plan and managing the team. Today, we’re going to take a look at some of the head coaches who were fired and why they got the ax.
Poor Performance
When it comes to the NFL, there are a lot of factors that go into why a player gets fired. It could be due to their poor performance on the field, off the field antics, or even because they don’t fit the team’s new scheme. Whatever the reason may be, getting fired from an NFL team is never an easy thing to stomach.
In most cases, players who are let go by their team are given the opportunity to sign with another team. However, there are a handful of players who have been so ineffective that no other team in the league wants them. These players often find themselves out of a job and without any prospects of getting picked up by another team.
Although getting cut from an NFL roster is never an easy thing to deal with, it’s important to remember that it’s not the end of the world. There are plenty of players who have been released by one team and gone on to have success with another. So, if you find yourself in this situation, don’t give up hope. There’s always a chance that you’ll land on your feet and find success elsewhere.
Lack of Wins
In the NFL, it’s not just about winning games—it’s about winning Super Bowls. That’s why head coaches are usually fired when their teams don’t live up to expectations and fail to make the playoffs. This was the case for several coaches this season, who were let go because their teams failed to make the playoffs or record a winning season.
Other coaches were fired for off-field issues, such as violating the league’s personal conduct policy. One coach was even fired before he even coached a single game! Here are all the head coaches who were fired this season:
-Steve Wilks, Arizona Cardinals
-Todd Bowles, New York Jets
-Dirk Koetter, Tampa Bay Buccaneers
-Adam Gase, Miami Dolphins
– Marvin Lewis, Cincinnati Bengals
– Hue Jackson, Cleveland Browns
– Vance Joseph, Denver Broncos
Off-Field Issues
The NFL has a personal conduct policy that all players must adhere to, and breaking this policy can result in disciplinary action up to and including termination of their contract. Many players have been released by their teams due to off-field issues, and this list includes some of the most recent examples.
-Reuben Foster, LB, Washington Redskins: Police responded to a domestic violence call involving Foster, and he was subsequently charged with felony assault. He was placed on the Commissioner’s Exempt List while his case was pending, and the Redskins released him after he was directed to stand trial.
-Tyreek Hill, WR, Kansas City Chiefs: Hill was investigated for allegedly assaulting his son, but he was not charged and no further action was taken by the team. However, audio recordings of Hill and his fiancee discussing the incident were later released, leading the team to suspend him indefinitely. He has since been reinstated but is facing another investigation from the league.
-Josh Gordon, WR, Cleveland Browns: Gordon has been suspended multiple times for violating the league’s substance abuse policy. He was conditionally reinstated in 2018 but then failed another drug test and was indefinitely suspended again. The Browns announced they were moving on from him after six years with the team.
-Vontaze Burfict, LB, Oakland Raiders: Burfict has a long history of on-field misconduct, including repeated personal fouls and suspensions for illegal hits. He was suspended for the first four games of the 2019 season for violating the league’s performance-enhancing drug policy; upon his return, he received a season-long suspension for an illegal hit on Colts tight end Jack Doyle. The Raiders released him following that suspension
Who Will Replace Them?
With the NFL season in full swing, some players are not performing up to par and are getting cut from their teams. This can be a good thing or a bad thing depending on how you look at it. On one hand, it gives other players a chance to step up and fill the void. On the other hand, it can create more problems for the team if the replacement players are not as good as the ones they replaced.
Cleveland Browns
The Cleveland Browns have fired head coach Hue Jackson after a 2-5-1 start to the season. Jackson compiled a 3-36-1 record in two-plus seasons with the Browns.
This is the second time Jackson has been fired by the Browns, as he was also dismissed as offensive coordinator in 2016 after going 1-15. Jackson will be replaced by defensive coordinator Gregg Williams on an interim basis.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Bruce Arians made it official today, retiring as the Head Coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. This was widely expected after the team failed to make the playoffs this year, resulting in a 7-9 record.
So who will replace Arians as the Head Coach of the Bucs? There are a few names being thrown around already, but no one has been formally hired yet.
Some of the top contenders for the job include:
-Raheem Morris: Morris is currently the interim Head Coach for the team and did a decent job in his role this season. He has previous experience as a Head Coach for the Buccaneers from 2009 to 2011, so he is familiar with the organization.
-Brian Daboll: Daboll is currently the Offensive Coordinator for the Buffalo Bills and has helped them reach the playoffs this year. He has also worked with some of the biggest names in football, including Bill Belichick and Nick Saban.
-Matt Rhule: Rhule is currently the Head Coach for Baylor University, but he has NFL experience, having served as an assistant coach for both the New York Giants and Carolina Panthers.
San Francisco 49ers
The San Francisco 49ers have fired head coach Chip Kelly and general manager Trent Baalke, the team announced on Sunday evening.
“The San Francisco 49ers have completed an internal review of our football operations and have made the decision to part ways with general manager Trent Baalke and head coach Chip Kelly,” the team said in a statement.
The decision comes one day after the 49ers’ 2-14 season came to an end with a 34-13 loss to the Seattle Seahawks. It was Kelly’s only season with the 49ers, and Baalke’s sixth as GM.
“We would like to thank Trent and Chip for their contributions to this organization,” the statement continued. “We will immediately begin a search for our next head coach and general manager. We expect to name a new head coach before the start of free agency.”
