Six-time NBA MVP
Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (born Ferdinand Lewis Alcindor Jr.; April 16, 1947) is an American former professional basketball player who played 20 seasons in the National Basketball Association (NBA) for the Milwaukee Bucks and the Los Angeles Lakers. During his career as a center, Abdul-Jabbar was a record six-time NBA Most Valuable Player (MVP), a record 19-time NBA All-Star, a 15-time All-NBA selection, and an 11-time NBA All-Defensive Team member. A member of six NBA championship teams as a player and two as an assistant coach, Abdul-Jabbar twice was voted NBA Finals MVP. In 1996, he was honored as one of the 50 Greatest Players in NBA History. NBA coach Pat Riley and players Isiah Thomas and Julius Erving have called him the greatest basketball player of all time.
After winning 71 consecutive basketball games on his high school team in New York City and leading West Side High School to three straight New York City Public Schools championships, Alcindor was recruited by colleges across the country. He chose to attend UCLA because of its head coach John Wooden’s reputation as a builder of champions. His first college game was against UC Santa Barbara where he scored 56 points, setting both the UCLA freshman scoring record and single-game freshman scoring record which still stands today. Alcindor had never played organized basketball before enrolling at UCLA; however, he quickly became the best player on Wooden’s team which won three consecutive NCAA Men’s Division I Basketball Championships between 1967 and 1969 despite losing its leading scorer Gail Goodrich to the Los Angeles Lakers after their first championship run. Alcindor averaged 26.2 points per game in his three seasons at UCLA while shooting 56 percent from the field and 71 percent from the free throw line; he remains UCLA’s all-time leading scorer with 2,325 points despite leaving early for professional play after his junior year despite protests from Wooden who claimed that leaving early would ruin Alcindor’s chances of being elected to either the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame or College Basketball Hall of Fame due to playing only three college seasons instead of four as every other inductee had done up until that point in time..
Abdul-Jabbar was selected by the Milwaukee Bucks with the first overall pick in the 1969 NBA draft over local favorite Lew Alcindor (later changed his name to Kareem Abdul-Jabbar). He quickly became one of only four players—along with Wilt Chamberlain, Oscar Robertson and Jerry West—to win an NCAA Men’s Division I Basketball Championship title plus an NBA Championship title during their first four years playing professional basketball
In 1975–76, Abdul-Jabbar was named league MVP for a record third time while averaging 24.8 points per game duringthe regular season plus 27 ppg duringthe playoffs when he ledthe Lakers overthe Eastern Conference champion Boston Celtics en route to winninghis second consecutive Finals MVP awardwhile averaging 30 ppg.. The 1977–78 seasonwould see Kareem Abdul-Jabbar winhis sixthand final regular season MVP awardwhile averaging 25.7 ppg forthe season but Kareem would again taste disappointment come playoff time when his Lakers were soundly beaten by Earl Monroe’s underdog New York Knicks team 4 games to 2 in
the 1978 NBA Finals with Monroe himself being named Finals MVP..
