The National Football League’s Rookie of the Year award is given to the player who is considered to have the best season among all first-year players. This year, there were a number of deserving candidates, but ultimately it was quarterback Kyler Murray who took home the honor.

Minshew was born in Brandon, Mississippi. He attended Brandon High School, where he played high school football for the Brandon Bulldogs. He committed to play college football at Northwest Mississippi Community College. After one season at Northwest Mississippi CC, he transferred to East Carolina University. After one year as a backup for the Pirates, he transferred to Washington State University. As a senior for the Cougars in 2018, he was named the Pac-12 Conference Offensive Player of the Year and led WSU to a school record 11 wins and a berth in the 2018 Alamo Bowl, where they defeated Iowa State 38–13. Minshew was drafted by the Jaguars in the sixth round with the 178th overall pick in 2019.
During his rookie season, Minshew took over as Jaguars starting quarterback after Nick Foles suffered a broken clavicle in Week 1 against Kansas City. Minshew’s performance as starter helped him earn NFL Rookie of the Month honors for September 2019.
