The National Football League’s Rookie of the Year Award is given to the best first-year player each season. This year, there were some great candidates for the award. Who do you think should have won?

Kyler Murray was drafted first overall in the 2019 NFL Draft by the Arizona Cardinals. He played college football at Oklahoma, where he won the Heisman Trophy in 2018. As a rookie in 2019, Murray started all 16 games for the Cardinals, completing 64.4% of his passes for 3,722 yards and 20 touchdowns with 12 interceptions and also ran for 544 yards and four touchdowns. He was named NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year.

Kyler Murray was born on August 7, 1997, in Bedford, Texas to Kevin and Missy Murray. His father was a former professional baseball player who was drafted by the Milwaukee Brewers in the 1982 MLB Draft. Kyler has an older sister, Mackenzie. Murray began playing football at the age of eight for the A&M Consolidated Tigers youth football team in College Station, Texas. He later attended Allen High School in Allen, Texas, where he played football and baseball. As a quarterback for the Allen Eagles football team, he led his team to three consecutive state championships from 2012 to 2014. In his senior year, he threw for 4,713 yards with 54 touchdowns and also rushed for 1,285 yards with 21 touchdowns. He was named the Gatorade National Football Player of the Year, the AP Player of the Year, and the USA Today Offensive Player of the Year.

Murray was drafted by the Oakland Athletics with the ninth overall pick in the 2018 MLB draft. He signed a contract with them for $4.66 million, which included a $1.5 million signing bonus, but chose to play football instead and enrolled at Oklahoma University to play college football for the Oklahoma Sooners football team. In his first year as starting quarterback for Oklahoma in 2019, he won the Heisman Trophy, becoming OU’s seventh Heisman winner and first since Jason White in 2003. The Sooners also made it to the College Football Playoff semi-finals that year before losing to eventual national champion Clemson. Murray declared himself eligible for the 2019 NFL Draft on January 14th, 2019 after his junior season. On April 26th he was selected as the first overall pick by Arizona Cardinals

Josh Jacobs

Josh Jacobs was born on February 11, 1999, in Tulsa, Oklahoma. He is an American football running back for the Oakland Raiders of the National Football League (NFL). Jacobs played college football at the University of Alabama, and was drafted by the Raiders in the first round of the 2019 NFL Draft.

Gardner Minshew was the NFL’s 2019 Rookie of the Year. He was drafted in the 6th round by the Jacksonville Jaguars. He played college football at Washington State. He is the first rookie to throw for over 3,000 yards and 20 touchdowns since Dak Prescott in 2016.

Minshew was named the starting quarterback for the Jaguars in Week 1 of his rookie season after Nick Foles suffered a broken collarbone during a preseason game.[2][3] He recorded 275 passing yards and two touchdown passes in his NFL debut against the Kansas City Chiefs.[4] In Week 3, he recorded 374 passing yards, two touchdown passes, and one interception against the Tennessee Titans.[5] On October 6, 2019, he was named the AFC Offensive Player of the Week for his performance in Week 5 against Carolina Panthers,[6] after completing 22 of 34 passes for 279 yards and three touchdowns.

Dak Prescott, the quarterback for the Dallas Cowboys, was awarded the AP NFL Rookie of the Year. Prescott was drafted in the fourth round of the 2016 NFL Draft. He was the Cowboys’ starting quarterback for all 16 regular season games. Prescott finished the season with 3,667 passing yards, 23 touchdown passes, and only four interceptions. He also rushed for six touchdowns.
