The WWE Championship is a world heavyweight championship created and promoted by the American professional wrestling promotion WWE on the SmackDown brand. It is one of WWE’s two flagship titles, alongside the WWE Universal Championship that is promoted on the Raw brand. The current champion is Drew McIntyre, who is in his second reign.

The title was introduced in 1963 by the then-worldwide leader in professional wrestling, the Capitol Wrestling Corporation (CWC). The first champion was “Nature Boy” Buddy Rogers, who won a nationally-televised tournament in Madison Square Garden, New York City. The title remained inactive until 1975, when Wide World Wrestling (WWW) reintroduced it as a special attraction match type with multiple wrestlers competing for it. Over the next few years, several wrestlers such as Pedro Morales and Superstar Billy Graham unsuccessfully challenged for the title before it became exclusive to WWW’s top show at Madison Square Garden, Saturday Night’s Main Event.

In 1984, WWWF obtained promotional control of Madison Square Garden and began holding title matches there again. The first WWF Champion under this new arrangement was Bruno Sammartino, who won a tournament to crown a new champion. In 1988,WWF split from its parent company of World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE), creating two separate companies with two separate championships. The original WWF Championship became the WWE Championship when WWE rebranded itself later that year while WWWF renamed itself World Wrestling Federation (WWF). Hulk Hogan became the first wrestler to win both titles when he defeated The Iron Sheik for the WWF Championship and Brutus Beefcake for the WWE Championship in 1988. In 2002, after WWF’s brand extension that saw the introduction of SmackDown as a separate television program from Raw, certain titles were made exclusive to one brand or another while others could be defended on both brands; however this arrangement was short-lived as later that year all titles were made exclusive to their respective brands once again with only two exceptions – Cruiserweight Champion and Women’s Champion which could be defended on either brand until 2007 and 2008 respectively when both championships became property of Raw following Unified Brand Extension

In May 2016 at Extreme Rules, then-WWE Champion Dean Ambrose was drafted to SmackDown as part of WWE’s draft lottery making SmackDown once again home to WWE’s main world championship followingBrand Extension which saw both Raw and SmackDown operate as separate entities with own rosters etc..
