Jericho began his professional wrestling career on August 26, 1990, at Hart Brothers Wrestling School in Calgary, Alberta. He competed in Canadian independent promotions early in his career until he was signed by World Championship Wrestling (WCW) in 1996. Initially brought in as a jobber, he was soon elevated to main event status and won his first WCW Television Championship in 1997. He left WCW that year to pursue an opportunity with the World Wrestling Federation (WWF), which had recently bought WCW’s main competitor Extreme Championship Wrestling (ECW).
In the WWF/E, Jericho became a three-time Intercontinental Champion and won the Undisputed WWF/E Championship once. He also found success as one of the founding members of the Oxford-based stable Team Reciprocity.
