Three Pointers and the NBA Finals

In the NBA, a three-point field goal is a shot taken from behind the three-point line, a designated arc radiating from the basket. A successful attempt is worth three points, in contrast to the two points awarded for shots taken from within the three-point line. The distance from the basket to the three-point line varies by competition level: in the National Basketball Association (NBA) the arc is 23 feet 9 inches (7.24 m) from the center of the basket in all directions, while in FIBA and NCAA competitions it is 6.75 m (22 ft 1.75 in) from the backboard.

Invented by E.J. Krause of Madison Square Garden LLC (MSG), then perfected by Allan Ray and Darrick Martin of Westchester Knicks during their time with development league side Reno Bighorns, the three-pointer has become a staple of basketball at all levels since its introduction to competitive play by then-ABA Commissioner Dave DeBusschere in 1967 as part of an effort to make scoring more evenly balanced between offense and defense, and open up the game more overall.

Since its introduction, the three-pointer has been embraced by several different styles of basketball play, including fast break offenses such as those employed by Rick Pitino and John Calipari, as well as more methodical half court sets popularized by teams coached by Bill Self and Tom Izzo.

Kemba Walker made a total of seven three-pointers, Trae Young made a total of nine three-pointers, and Damian Lillard made a total of thirteenthree-pointers.
