The NHL was founded in 1917 as a response to the demise of its predecessor organization, the National Hockey Association (NHA), which had been founded in 1909. After a series of disputes between teams of the NHA, particularly between Eddie Livingstone of the Toronto Blueshirts and Frank Calder of the Montreal Canadiens, the NHL was established as a new governing body that would eliminate some of Livingstone’s franchise instability. Initially a three-team league with rosters made up mostly of francophone players, it expanded during World War II to temporarily become a twelve-team league with players from across North America before contracting back down to six teams by 1950. The Original Six era saw competitive balance between teams; however, since 1967 expansion and parity have resulted in significant changes in statistical patterns among teams. As such, standings can vary widely from year-to-year and day-to-day.
