The following year he was moved to running back, rushed for 1,998 yards (an average of 5.9 yards per carry) and scored 22 touchdowns while adding another touchdown reception. In his junior year, Smith rushed for 1,315 yards (an average of 5.5 per carry) and scored 19 touchdowns while catching two touchdown passes and returning one kickoff for a touchdown.

In his rookie year, Peterson was named NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year after setting an NFL single-season rushing record of 1,760 yards. The following season, he became only one of six players to gain 2,000 or more yards on offense and helped lead his team to victory in Super Bowl XLII. In 2010, he became only one of three players to have three consecutive seasons with at least 1,200 rushing yards and 10 or more rushing touchdowns. His 2009 season was arguably his most impressive as he set another NFL single-season rushing record with 2,097 yards (ninth all-time), only 50 yards shy of Eric Dickerson’s 34-year old record of 2,105yards; Dickerson himself has called Peterson “the best running back I’ve ever seen”.

Peterson finished his college career as Oklahoma’s second all-time leading rusher behind only 1970 Heisman Trophy winner Steve Owens.
After his first season in the NFL, in which he rushed for 1,341 yards and was named NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year, Peterson broke the NFL single-game rushing record with 296 yards against San Diego in 2007. The following year, he became only the fifth player to ever have more than 2,000 rushing yards in a season, finishing with 2,314. In 2010, he became just one of six players to rush more than 300 times and finish with over 1,800 rushing yards while scoring 15 or more touchdowns, along with LaDainian Tomlinson (2006), Jamal Lewis (2003), Terrell Davis (1998), Barry Sanders (1997), and O.J. Simpson (1975). Peterson was then named an All-Pro for first time after being selected as a member of the AP’s All-Pro team.
