The answer may surprise you – it’s not the team with the most wins, or the team with the most superstar players.
Cleveland Cavaliers
Entering the 2019 NBA Draft, the Cleveland Cavaliers own the most draft picks over the next three years. They have six picks in 2019 (including the No. 5 overall), five in 2020 (including their own first-round pick and the Houston Rockets’ first-rounder) and four in 2021.
2016 NBA draft
The 2016 NBA draft was held on June 23, 2016, at Barclays Center in Brooklyn.
It was televised nationally in the U.S. on ESPN.
National Basketball Association (NBA) teams took turns selecting amateur U.S. college basketball players and other eligible players, including international players.
The draft lottery took place on May 17, 2016.
It decided the first three selections of the draft; the remaining first-round picks and the second-round picks were assigned to teams in reverse order of their win–loss record in the 2015–16 season.
This draft also gave The Cavaliers the record for most first round picks in an NBA draft with five selections: Andrew Bogut (first pick), Dragan Bender (fourth pick), Kris Dunn (fifth pick), Thon Maker (tenth pick) and Jamal Murray (seventeenth pick).
2017 NBA draft
The 2017 NBA draft was held on June 22, 2017, at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. National Basketball Association (NBA) teams took turns selecting amateur U.S. college basketball players and other eligible players, including international players. The draft lottery took place during the playoffs on May 16, 2017. The 53–29 Boston Celtics, who were also the number one seed in the Eastern Conference and reached the Eastern Conference Finals at the time of the NBA draft lottery, won the first overall pick with a 25 percent chance. The Los Angeles Lakers, who had a 36–46 record and missed the playoffs, won the second overall pick with a 19.9 percent chance (26 percent after tie breakers). The Philadelphia 76ers traded their third pick to the Sacramento Kings for two future second-round picks in 2015 and 2016 as a consequence of earlier trades for Nerlens Noel and Dario Saric respectively; as such they did not participate in this year’s draft lottery. This draft was notable for being one of the deepest and most talented NBA drafts in recent memory Online sportsbook 5Dimes gave Kentucky 80-1 odds of having five players selected in a single draft class—the highest odds ever given to any college prior to Draft Day.[1] An all-time record 38 international prospects were selected in this year’s draft.[2]
Los Angeles Lakers
The Los Angeles Lakers have had the most NBA draft picks since the inception of the NBA draft in 1947. The Lakers have had a total of 79 draft picks, 40 of which have been first round picks. The Lakers have selected first overall 11 times, the most of any team in the NBA.
2016 NBA draft
The 2016 NBA draft was held on June 23, 2016, at Barclays Center in Brooklyn. It was televised nationally in the U.S. by ESPN. The draft used the new draft lottery system introduced in the 2014 NBA draft, where the teams with the three worst records from the previous season each had a 14% chance of receiving the first overall pick, while the team with the worst record overall had a 25% chance of receiving the first pick and the team with the second worst record overall had a 19.9% chance of receiving the first pick. The draft lottery took place during halftime of Game 2 of the 2016 NBA Finals on June 2, between representatives of seven lottery teams. The Philadelphia 76ers won the lottery, while selecting first overall for only their second time in franchise history (and for what would be only their fourth time since 1954). Ben Simmons was selected as consensus number one overall pick by all media outlets (which is unusual as most mocks had Ingram going number one pre-lottery).
1. Philadelphia 76ers: Ben Simmons, PF/SF, LSU
2. Los Angeles Lakers: Brandon Ingram, SF, Duke
3. Boston Celtics (from Brooklyn Nets): Jaylen Brown, SF, California

This draft is notable for being the first ever in which a pair of brothers – Lonzo and LiAngelo Ball – were both selected in the first round (although not as high as their father LaVar predicted). It was also the first draft since 1963 in which three players from the same school were all selected in the top 10 picks of the draft; those three were Markelle Fultz (1st), Josh Jackson (4th) and Lauri Markkanen (7th), all from Washington.

The Boston Celtics got the first overall pick from the Brooklyn Nets through a previous trade. The Los Angeles Lakers kept their pick despite it being second overall due to it being their own pick originally before trading it away to the Phoenix Suns as part of the Steve Nash deal in 2012. This marked the first time ever that two Eastern Conference teams had held the top two picks in an NBA draft; it was also the fourth straight year in which an Atlantic Division team would hold one of those picks, following two years of this happening between Boston and Philadelphia (respectively holding picks 1 and 3 in both 2014 and 2016) and Brooklyn and Orlando (picks 2 and 5 respectively) a year earlier in 2016.
