We take a look at the NBA players with the most MVPs in history.
Michael Jordan – 6
Michael Jordan is the NBA player with the most MVPs in history. He was named MVP a record six times, including five consecutive times from 1991 to 1995. He also won the award in 1998, when he was a member of the Chicago Bulls. Jordan is widely considered to be one of the greatest players in NBA history.
Kareem Abdul-Jabbar – 6
Kareem Abdul-Jabbar is the NBA’s all-time leading scorer, and he’s also the player with the most MVP awards in history. He won six MVPs during his stellar 20-year career, which is three more than any other player in NBA history.
Abdul-Jabbar won his first MVP award in 1971, when he led the Milwaukee Bucks to a 60-22 record. He averaged 34.8 points, 16.6 rebounds and 5.0 blocks per game that season, and he also won the NBA Finals MVP award as the Bucks beat the Baltimore Bullets in four games.
The following year, Abdul-Jabbar won his second MVP award after averaging a league-best 38.3 points per game. He also won back-to-back MVPs in 1974 and 1975, becoming just the second player in NBA history to do so (after Wilt Chamberlain).
In 1976, Abdul-Jabbar won his fifth MVP award after leading the Bucks to a league-best 58-24 record. He averaged 24.6 points, 12.5 rebounds and 4.1 blocks per game that season.
Finally, in 1980, Abdul-Jabbar won his sixth and final MVP award after leading the Los Angeles Lakers to a 52-30 record. He averaged 21.5 points, 9.5 rebounds and 2.7 blocks per game that season en route to winning his third NBA Finals MVP award as well (he also won Finals MVPs in 1985 and 1988).
LeBron James – 4
As of 2019, LeBron James has the most MVPs in NBA history with four. He won his first MVP award in 2009 and followed it up with wins in 2010, 2012, and 2013. Michael Jordan is second on the list with five MVPs, but James is still actively playing and could add to his total in the future.
Bill Russell – 5
Bill Russell is a retired American professional basketball player who played center for the Boston Celtics of the National Basketball Association (NBA). Known for his shot-blocking and man-to-man defense, Russell was the cornerstone of the Celtics dynasty that won eleven NBA championships during his thirteen-year career. He was the centerpiece of the Celtics team that defeated the Los Angeles Lakers in the NBA Finals six times. In 1958, Russell became the first African American to be named MVP in the NBA. He is one of just four players to have won five or more MVP awards in their career.
Wilt Chamberlain – 4
Wilt Chamberlain was a dominant player in the NBA, winning 7 MVPs in his career. He is the only player in NBA history to average more than 50 points in a season, and he holds the record for most points in a single game with 100.
