In 1996, he was honored as one of the 50 Greatest Players in NBA History. NBA coach Pat Riley and players LeBron James and Kobe Bryant have called him the greatest basketball player of all time.

The Lakers have had many great players throughout their history including Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Magic Johnson, Shaquille O’Neal, Kobe Bryant, and LeBron James.

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar was born Ferdinand Lewis Alcindor Jr. in New York City, the first of Lew and Cora Alcindor’s four children. His father was a transit police officer and his mother a department store price checker. When he was just shy of his sixth birthday, his parents renamed him Kareem after a noble Arabian chieftain. Kareem excelled at basketball from an early age, and when he entered high school he was already 6’8″.
In his senior year of high school, Kareem led Power Memorial Academy to an undefeated 35-0 record and the New York City Catholic High School championship. That year he was named Parade magazine’s High School Player of the Year, and he was also named All-American by the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) and United Press International (UPI).
After graduating from high school in 1965, Kareem accepted a scholarship to play basketball at UCLA, where he would go on to have one of the most successful college careers in history. In his freshman year, he helped lead the Bruins to the NCAA championship with a dominance that had not been seen since Bill Russell’s days at the University of San Francisco. Kareem continued to lead UCLA to NCAA titles in his sophomore and junior years as well, becoming only the second player in history (after Russell) to win three consecutive collegiate championships.
