The Lakers compete in the National Basketball Association (NBA), as a member of the league’s Western Conference in the Pacific Division. The Lakers play their home games at Staples Center, an arena shared with the NBA’s Los Angeles Clippers and the NHL’s Los Angeles Kings.
The franchise began with the 1947 purchase of a disbanded team, the Detroit Gems of the National Basketball League (NBL). The new team began playing in Minneapolis, calling themselves the Minneapolis Lakers. Initially a member of the NBL, the Lakers won the 1948 NBL championship before joining the rival Basketball Association of America, where they would win five of the next six championships, led by star George Mikan. After struggling financially in the late 1950s following Mikan’s retirement, they relocated to Los Angeles before tension between management and star players led to decay of talent and finances. Constant MIS management couldn’t turn things round quick enough and it wasn’t until Jerry Buss bought them in 1979 that they finally found stability.
Despite initial struggles while playing under nine head coaches from 1960 onward, they managed to make playoffs through most of those years but failed to advance past conference semifinals until 1968–69 when former Boston Celtic Elgin Baylor took over as head coach leading them to their first ever NBA Finals appearance against his old team which they lost 4–3 despite Baylor averaging nearly a triple double for those playoffs (34.8 points per game, 19.8 rebounds per game and 9 assists per game). In 1972–73 under new head coach Bill Sharman they finally broke through by defeating the New York Knicks 4–1 led by future hall of famers Wilt Chamberlain (acquired from Philadelphia two years earlier) and Jerry West en route to their first ever NBA title easily winning a then-record 33 games straight on their way to 69 total wins that season which stood as a record for 34 years until it was broken by Michael Jordan’s Chicago Bulls who won 72 games during their 1995–96 season en route to their fourth title that year.

After Coast Guard duty during World War II, George Mikan returned to DePaul University as its men’s basketball coach and helped turn around its fortunes after years as a doormat program. Mikan was hired as general manager for three years starting in 1949 followed by a three-year stint as head coach from 1952–1955; Dolph Schayes was his top assistant coach during those seasons. Mikan then returned to his GM position from 1955–57 before stepping down for health reasons; he was succeeded by Jack McMahon during those two seasons. After brief stops back at DePaul as head coach and GM from 1957–59 and again from 1968–70, Mikan became head coach of expansion franchise Minnesota Muskies for one season before returning yet again to DePaul as head coach from 1972 until his retirement in 1976. He is credited with creating many innovative rules that helped transform basketball into what it is today.[1]
Mikan also coached several All-American teams to Olympic gold medals: 1948 (?, Assistant Coach), 1952 (?, Assistant Coach) and 1960 (Head Coach).
