Other PPG Leaders
As the 2020-2021 NBA season is underway, there have been many top scorers throughout the years. However, there are always a handful of players who are head and shoulders above the rest when it comes to points per game. In this article, we will take a look at the five highest career PPG averages in NBA history.
LeBron James
LeBron James is an American professional basketball player for the Los Angeles Lakers of the National Basketball Association (NBA). LeBron has led the league in scoring seven times and won four NBA Most Valuable Player Awards, four NBA Finals MVP Awards, and two Olympic gold medals. He is often considered one of the best basketball players in NBA history. In 2020, LeBron was ranked as the greatest player of all time by ESPN.
During his seventeen seasons in the NBA, LeBron has played for three teams: the Cleveland Cavaliers, Miami Heat, and the Lakers. He is currently in his tenth season with the Lakers. In his career, LeBron has averaged 27.1 points per game (PPG), 7.4 rebounds per game (RPG), and 7.2 assists per game (APG). He is one of only six players in NBA history to average at least 25 PPG, 7 RPG, and 7 APG for their careers.
LeBron currently ranks first among active players in PPG and fourth in all-time scoring behind Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Karl Malone, and Kobe Bryant. He also ranks second in all-time assists and is fifth in all-time steals. LeBron has been named to fifteen All-NBA teams (first team twelve times) and fifteen All-Defensive teams (first team nine times). He is the only player in NBA history to be named to both an All-NBA team and an All-Defensive team for thirteen consecutive seasons.
Kawhi Leonard
Kawhi Leonard is an American professional basketball player for the Los Angeles Clippers of the National Basketball Association (NBA). Leonard played two seasons of college basketball for the San Diego State Aztecs, and was named a consensus second-team All-American as a sophomore. He was selected by the Indiana Pacers with the 15th overall pick in the 2011 NBA draft, but was traded to the San Antonio Spurs on draft night.
During his seven-year tenure with the Spurs, Leonard won an NBA championship in 2014 and was named the NBA Finals Most Valuable Player (MVP) after averaging 17.8 points, 6.4 rebounds and 2.0 assists per game during the series. He was also named to two NBA All-Defensive Teams and two All-NBA Teams. In 2018, he was traded to the Toronto Raptors in exchange for DeMar DeRozan, Jakob Poeltl and a protected 2019 first round pick; he helped lead them to their first NBA championship in franchise history that same year. Leonard was named Finals MVP again after averaging 28.5 points and 9.8 rebounds per game during the series.
In 2019, Leonard signed with the Clippers, where he has since been paired with fellow All-Star Paul George in what has been dubbed as “Lob City 2.0”.
Kevin Durant
Now in his third season with the Warriors, Kevin Durant is averaging 26.4 points per game, which is good for fifth in the league. Durant is also pulling down 6.8 rebounds and dishing out 5.4 assists per contest. The Warriors have the best record in the NBA at 33-8.
The Most PPG in the NBA
In the National Basketball Association, points per game (PPG) is the mean of points scored by a player in a game. PPG is a statistic only concerned with scoring points, and is thus not related to other aspects of the game such as assists or rebounds.
Russell Westbrook
In the 2016-2017 NBA season, Russell Westbrook had a historic year. He averaged a triple double for the entire season, something that hasn’t been done since Oscar Robertson in 1962. Along with his obscene average of 10.4 assists and 10.7 rebounds per game, Westbrook also led the league in scoring, averaging a total of 31.6 points per game. This made him the first player since Michael Jordan in 1988 to lead the league in both points and assists.
James Harden
In the 2018-19 season, James Harden averaged 36.1 points per game (PPG). He is one of only four players in NBA history to average at least 35 PPG in a single season, joining Wilt Chamberlain, Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant.
Anthony Davis
Anthony Davis has been in the NBA for 7 years and counting. He has played for the New Orleans Pelicans and the Los Angeles Lakers. In those 7 years, he has had some amazing seasons. His best season was in 2016-2017 when he averaged 28.1 PPG, 11.1 RPG, 2.3 BPG, and 2.6 SPG. That year he was also named an All-Star, won a gold medal with Team USA at the Olympics, and was named First Team All-NBA and Defensive Player of the Year.
